Tainan is a popular tourist destination for the ancient capital’s historic sites, delicious food, and even its unique signage. One faded sign advertising “divorce for NT$500” has become a surprisingly popular photo spot among Japanese tourists. The owner said the sign has been there for almost 30 years. Even though prices have risen a lot, the cost of a divorce agreement here remains the same.
A Japanese tourist posted a photo of a street in Tainan, highlighting a faded sign that says, “Divorce for NT$500,” and asking if this has become a tourist attraction. In a chain of comments, other Japanese people said they had also seen the sign and taken photos. This has become a popular sight among Japanese tourists, but locals don’t really understand why.
Japan expert
Local resident
It might be unexpected and shocking for Japanese people, because they tend to be pretty low-key about divorce. With that sign hanging there, I think that Japanese people wouldn’t even walk on the sidewalk next to it.
The sign is on Fuqian Road among many law firms. The business owner said that NT$500 is the cost of a divorce agreement, but she never thought the sign would become a tourist attraction for Japanese people.
Yeh Mei-yun
Notary
The sign has been there for 20 years or so. Each divorce agreement comes with three copies, and I always charge NT$500.
As the characters for divorce are the same in Japanese Kanji as in Chinese, the sign made Japanese tourists curious. The notary who runs this business said divorce agreements used to be hand-written, but now everything is electronic. Divorce agreements can even be found in stationary stores or at the household registration office, so business is not as good as before. Smiling, she said it would be great if the sign could bring in more customers.
