It’s time. Looking back on my career, I feel I have no regrets. I think I’ve accomplished everything I wanted to do. So I’m ready to say goodbye to everyone at this time. I’m also psychologically prepared. Winning isn’t the only way to define who you are. What often defines you is your experiences of failure and whether you can face it in a different way. This actually can make you an even better person.
Chan won a total of 33 women’s doubles titles and three Grand Slam mixed doubles titles during her career. She also represented Taiwan in numerous Olympic Games and Asian Games, winning five gold medals. In the past two years, she has taken a break from the court owing to an injury. During the time, she earned a PhD degree and A-level coaching qualifications. Chan has experienced many ups and downs, her biggest turning point being her withdrawal from the Taipei Universiade due to heatstroke, bringing her both praise and criticism. She also had a long-running feud with tennis star Hsieh Su-wei and her family. Her retirement will be honored at a ceremony at the Australian Open on Jan. 24, where she will officially bid farewell to her fans.
