Power banks banned on Taipei MRT owing to frequent reports of explosions

2026-01-23

Power bank explosions have become a regular occurrence in recent years. As such, the Taipei Metro has now banned power banks on their premises. Specifically, starting on Friday, passengers are prohibited from using a power bank inside stations, on platforms and on the trains.

Smoke fills the carriage. It’s coming from a power bank left on the floor that has blown up. It’s the fifth such incident in the last three years. Authorities say that passengers caught using or carrying power banks will first receive a warning from a station officer. Should they not comply and cause a fire, Taipei Metro will take legal action, pressing criminal charges for threatening public safety and demanding compensation.
