Tainan’s innovative scheme for reducing plastic waste at markets

2026-05-05

To reduce plastic waste, the Tainan City Government has come up with an innovative idea: it has set up “bag sharing” stations in 45 markets throughout the city. Shoppers can find pre-used bags at the stations that have been left behind by other shoppers and use them. Let’s find out more.

When visiting a traditional market, people often end up with several bags with just one shop. But, if you forget to bring a bag, you can go to the “bag sharing” station, open a drawer and find all kinds of shopping bags inside.

People aren’t used to bringing their own bags when shopping here, so we came up with this system of sharing bags to create a kind of cycle of goodwill.

To reduce plastic use, the Tainan City Government has set up “bag sharing” stations at 45 public markets to encourage the public to donate or use second-hand shopping bags. This not only protects the environment but also helps vendors reduce some costs.

- They come in handy, and help reduce costs.

But carrier bags are personal items after all. Do people feel comfortable sharing them? Do they dare?

-I don’t usually use those reusable shopping bags outside because I think it’s a hygiene issue.

- I just took theirs because I forgot to bring a bag.
- Aren’t you worried that this might be dirty since someone else used it before?
- No, not really, because I was carrying vegetables, and I’ll wash them when I get home.

- I brought it myself
- You did?
- Yes, it’s better to bring it yourself.

Some people have doubts, while others are supportive of the idea. Public acceptance varies from person to person. However, whether you bring your own or get a second-hand shopping bag, you can do your part for environmental protection and help traditional markets reduce the use of plastic bags.
