Rock band led by ER doctor inspires students nationwide to cherish life

Tainan ER physician Su Shih-yang formed the band Rose Tomb 18 years ago. Over that time, they’ve given around 500 free concerts at schools around the country. By conveying his experiences in the emergency room through music, Su hopes to inspire students to cherish their one life.

A rock band performs on a stage. The lead singer in all black gives moving vocals, fully immersing the students in the audience. You’d never think that when he’s not on stage, he works in the ER.

Now in a white doctor’s coat, he tends to a patient in the ER. This is Su Shih-yang, the attending physician in Tainan Municipal Hospital’s emergency room. Eighteen years ago, he formed the rock band Rose Tomb, which has since been to schools around the country to give free concerts.

A band teaching life lessons, and a rock band, no less. It always ends up exceeding their expectations. They never thought that music could speak to life itself, even changing the students’ behaviors and influencing their habits.

Doctor Su found me. He said he needed a drummer and asked if I wanted to try it out. I never imagined I’d be so moved by his writing, even to this day.

I’m over 70. To live in a way that makes me feel more alive and has meaning—I believe that’s my greatest contribution.

That day, we started emergency treatment at 3 o’clock. By 4, there was no response. By 5 there was no response. Finally, at 5:30, we declared our efforts unsuccessful.

By setting to music his own experiences with life and death in the ER, it conveys the preciousness and fragility of life. Su hopes his music can inspire the students to cherish life, while also warning them away from drugs. He’s now performed nearly 500 times all around Taiwan.

Some people have to struggle just to stay alive. It makes me realize how lucky I am to be alive and well right now.

Rose Tomb was even invited to perform at the New Year’s Day flag-raising ceremony in front of the Presidential Office in Taipei, giving their music a chance to reach more people.

台南一名急診室醫師蘇世揚，18年前組成了玫瑰墓樂團，多年來前往全台許多校園進行公益演唱，至今已累積約500場，透過音樂和急診室經歷的故事，希望同學們能愛惜自己寶貴的生命。

搖滾樂團成員在舞台上進行演出，身穿黑衣的主唱，以溫暖的歌聲打動人心，讓台下學生沉浸其中，但你知道嗎？他的身分，其實是一名急診室的醫師。

分享自己在急診室感受到的生死故事，經過創作轉為搖滾音樂，提醒民眾生命的珍貴和脆弱，希望藉此讓大家愛惜自己的生命，同時也提醒學生不吸毒，累積全台演出已經將近500場。

The 43-year-old Dr. Kuo has been working as a dentist for over a decade. Last year he decided to merge his profession with his hobby and started posting singing videos on social media. Now, he’s gone viral.

I was mentally prepared for the fact that a chubby guy dancing would get teased a lot online. I really didn’t expect the response to be so positive. People have been so encouraging.

Turning the clinic into his stage, Dr. Kuo shoots reels during his time off. Since he isn’t a dancer, he watches videos to ingrain the choreography in his memory. It takes him up to six hours just to learn and shoot a 30-second video.

Customer asks ‘handsome’ owner for extra sauce, gets entire bottle

Add a little sweet talk to your delivery order, and you might get special treatment! Looking to get a little extra sauce, a customer added a message calling the owner handsome. Surprisingly, it worked. They ended up getting a massive bag of ketchup and an entire bottle of chili sauce with their order, much to the amusement of people online. Shop owner punctures tire to warn against indiscriminate parking

An auto-repair shop owner in Taichung went viral after sticking a nail in the tire of a car parked outside his shop and posting it online, warning people not to park in inappropriate places. It turns out it was his own car wheel that he punctured, all to prove his point.

Former top baseball player is now star dumplings chef

In Kaohsiung’s Renwu District, there’s an eatery owned by former baseball star Chen Cheng-chung. Chen was in the CPBL’s Mercuries Tigers team and was the league’s first player in history to hit a grand slam. After his career as a sports star ended, he took over his family’s dumplings business over two decades ago. Let’s meet Chen and find out about his delicious dumplings.

The proprietor skillfully stirs the dumplings in a pot to prevent them from sticking to each other. After about eight minutes, a plate of dumplings is ready to be served.

A dumpling wrapper is gently opened to reveal a generous filling inside. The dumplings come in a variety of flavors, including beef, shrimp and kidney beans. At mealtimes, the eatery is always packed with customers.

Regulars know that the proprietor, who has developed so many delicious dumplings, was once a national baseball player.

Not only was Chen Cheng-chung part of the Taiwanese team that won the Little League championship in the US in 1974, but he was also the first player in the CPBL to hit a grand slam. After taking over the family dumpling business, Chen said he started from scratch making dumplings and he went through a long adjustment period.

Making dumplings is actually my family’s business. People told us how to make them, but it still took about two and a half years before things finally stabilized. We tried many things and made many mistakes. We didn’t know which type of pork was best for making dumplings. Each type of pork requires a different combination of ingredients, and that only comes from experience, so we were still figuring it out at that time.

His former career as a player also attracts many longtime fans, some of whom travel from far away to see him.

Several years ago, a couple came down from Taipei. After we finished eating, the husband took out a ball and said, “This is the ball from the grand slam you hit.” When he handed it to me, I was really happy and thought, “The fans still haven’t forgotten.”

When Chen’s former teammates visit Kaohsiung, they make a point of greeting him. Even after shedding his star player aura and changing his career, he’s still continuing to make an impact thanks to his dumplings.

A video of an ice lolly melting in the sun has creeped out students at an all-girls high school in Tainan, for its sexually suggestive nature. That’s because the video is an artwork at an exhibition by a male master’s student, titled “Rub’n it comes out.” The video is taken from the point of view of the artist, who is holding up the frozen treat outside the high school. But the focus of the video is the underage female students walking back and forth in the background. The connotations of the work are crystal clear, and even back at the time of filming, school security was called to stop him. Let’s hear more.

The Tainan Cultural Affairs Bureau ultimately determined that the exhibition violated the rights and privacy of minors. The works by the artist in question were removed, and the government revoked subsidies for the first half of the year for the gallery holding the show.

The artist, who is a master’s student at Tainan National University of the Arts has released an apology. But Tainan Senior High has refused it, reported the case to the police and filed a gender equality report against the university. Police say the case is being handled in accordance with the Child and Juvenile Welfare and Rights Protection Act.
