Taichung family restaurant pairs tofu pudding with savory buns

One tofu pudding place at Taichung’s Zhongxiao Night Market has been around for 50 years, progressing from its humble beginnings as a small stand to finally buying a storefront. To give customers more choice, 30 years ago it also started selling guabao, or pork belly buns. Its unique pairing of sweet pudding with savory pork has been unexpectedly popular.

A chef scoops tofu pudding into a bowl and adds toppings like peanuts and sweet rice balls. Now this delicious bowl of douhua is ready to be served!

This douhua place at Taichung’s Zhongxiao Night Market has been around for 50 years.

We started off as a stand on the side of the road. We were really at the mercy of the elements. It was hard work, honestly. Sometimes as soon as we pushed the stand out, it started pouring. But you’ve already prepared everything, so everyone just gets soaked that day, everything is wasted, and nothing is sold. As we slowly got more experienced, my in-laws decided that it would be easier to do this if we bought a storefront.

Progressing from a small stand to a storefront, this tofu pudding shop was handed down from one generation of the family to the next. Now there are three generations working there all together.

Now we’re in the third generation. The shop has been running for almost 50 years, and I hope it will reach 60.

But douhua isn’t the only thing on the menu.

While the guabao bun is hot, she adds pickled vegetables, pork belly, coriander, and peanut powder. Pairing sweet pudding with this savory bun is a popular choice here.

- It’s a new experience, like buying dinner and dessert together.

- It’s more filling, which some people like.

Pairing guabao with douhua is definitely a unique choice, so why did the restaurant start offering it together?

My mother thought that since douhua was selling pretty well, it could be paired with guabao, like a fusion restaurant, so customers could have something savory too. We started selling guabao in 1994.

Both options here are exceptional, making it a popular choice for a savory snack as well as a sweet treat.

在台中忠孝夜市,有一間在地50年的老牌豆花店,從原先的小攤販,經過風吹雨淋,不斷打拼,到買下店面,為了想提供給客人更多口味選擇,在30年前,還加入刈包一起販售,甜進心裡的豆花,搭配分量飽滿的刈包,是在地十分特別的美食組合!

白嫩嫩豆花,被鐵勺輕輕挖起,裝碗,轉身,加料,好吃的豆花,出爐囉。

位在台中忠孝夜市的這家豆花店,在地已經有50多年歷史。

“一開始,我們是擺路邊攤的方式,在路邊攤的話,其實真的就是要看老天爺吃飯,很辛苦,真的,有時候攤子一推出來,就突然間下大雨,然後你東西也準備了,然後那天就大家都淋成落湯雞,東西也都浪費掉了,甚麼都不用賣,後來就慢慢地累積經驗,然後公公婆婆也決定說,買一間店面的話,這樣做起來會比較舒服”

從小攤販,到買下店面,一代傳一代,身為第二代的老闆娘,已經在培養下一位接班人,現在三代同堂,共同經營。

“現在做到這邊目前是第三代了,經營差不多快五十年了,我很希望可以做一甲子”

不過在同一家店面下,除了賣豆花,還有這個。

刈包皮冒著熱氣,加入酸菜、五花肉,再鋪上香菜,撒上花生粉,豆花配上刈包,是店裡一大熱門組合!

“我覺得就是很新的體驗,就跟晚餐跟點心一起賣很像”

“可能會比較有飽足感吧,有些人喜歡這樣子”

豆花配刈包是真的很特別,不過怎麼會想到這樣的搭配?

“就是媽媽想說,那時候因為豆花生意也算還可以,就想說豆花可以搭配刈包,像複合式餐飲這樣子,又可以吃個小點心,從83年就開始賣刈包,到現在”

甜滋滋豆花,熱騰騰刈包,是特別搭檔,也是在地人口中的,經典搭配。
