Former FT correspondent exposes says all votes in Hualien are paid for

“In rural Hualien, all the votes are paid for.” That’s the statement that former Financial Times Correspondent Kathrin Hille made during an interview here at FTV. The journalist, who lives in rural Hualien, recounted a story from her neighbors in which people had gone to their home to straight-up ask for a price while putting the money on the table. She says, the account is not a one-off, and that vote-buying is something that must be dealt with.
The declaration has set the internet on fire. Senior American journalist Chris Horton shared a clip of the interview on X, saying “Respect.” Meanwhile, Taipei Times staff columnist Courtney Donovan Smith shared a story about his time working at cram schools owned by KMT patronage faction politicians in Changhua. He says he saw first-hand the giant piles of cash they would prepare for buying votes. When he joked whether the money was for him, he was matter-of-factly told that it was for buying votes. Candidates running for Hualien County Commissioner have come forward, urging prosecutors and investigators to intervene and uncover the truth. An investigation is underway.

前金融時報駐台記者席佳琳接受民視專訪提到，「花蓮那邊所有的票都是買的」，她說住花蓮鄉下，鄰居告訴她有人來，把現金放到桌子上，說今年一票多少，這不是例外，應該要處理。
買票話題一出，連日來在網路發酵，資深美籍記者何貴森，發文表達尊敬，台北時報專欄作家石東文，也揭露，多年前，為彰化國民黨地方派系的政治人物工作時，親眼看過他們為了買票，準備一大堆現金，他們理所當然的回答，當然是拿來買票的。花蓮縣長參選人，紛紛跳出來，呼籲檢調趕快介入，查出真相，檢調也已經分案調查，確認到底有沒有賄選。
