For 70 years, a Taoyuan family has been running a traditional store

2026-08-31

In Taiwan, it’s hard not to see a 7-Eleven wherever you go. But it’s rare to see a traditional general store. In Longtan District in Taoyuan a 70-year-old general store that’s been run by two generations is still thriving. With old fashioned striped sweets and fresh vegetables, it’s run by Wu Chin-lan, a woman in her seventies who wants to give back to her community Let’s find out more.

This proprietress is busy moving in and out, carrying newly arrived goods into her store. This is a general store in Longtan District in Taoyuan, that has been in business for 70 years and has been run by two generations.

Daily necessities and traditional snacks are neatly arranged on the shelves.

Wu Chin-lan, the proprietress, is over 70 years old. She took over this general store after she inherited it from her father. Her younger sister comes here to lend a hand whenever she’s got time off.

My mother said that she relied on this shop to support us kids. She didn’t want to give up on it. The main thing was to support herself and live independently. It’s a place where older people can buy their own things and that’s how it’s managed to keep going. Actually, we’re getting old ourselves; we just want it to support ourselves, not to make money.

- Wow, so cheap! This huge bag is only NT$50! Look how good it is!
- NT$50
- How great! Look at how good they are at growing them.

What’s most special is that you can buy fresh vegetables in small quantities. Nearby residents bring their surplus vegetables from their own gardens to the store for cheap sale, making it convenient for older adults living alone to shop.

-They’re sold in small quantities, buy as much as you want, prices are quite reasonable and the owner is very nice to customers.
-You’re too kind.

The wares are different. People with small farms in her area grow their own vegetables. They’re delicious!

Residents love this friendly atmosphere, and even though there are four convenience stores and two small supermarkets nearby, the general store still does very well.

We work 365 days a year without a break. Around 6 a.m., we start by arranging these things. Products nearing their expiration date are generally not accepted by customers. We eat them ourselves, and if we can’t finish them, we give them to older adults or those with limited financial means.

For decades, the two sisters have run their small shop in the warmest way, making it a vital lifeline for the local community.
