
Every September, strawberry farmers in Miaoli’s Dahu Township prepare fields for the growing season. While they used to turn soil and add fertilizer by hand, they now use machines to save labor and time. The equipment speeds up the process and mixes fertilizer more evenly, helping strawberry roots take hold and grow strong.
A strawberry farmer turns the soil with a small rake, slowly moving along the elevated bed. It takes lots of time and effort, but now there’s a machine to help.
The tiller moves quickly down the row, turning the soil and evenly spreading fertilizer so the strawberry plants can grow strong.

People can turn the soil in two to three rows per day, but the tiller can do almost 20 rows a day.
Every September, strawberry farmers in Dahu, Miaoli, prepare their fields for planting. They used to spend all day raking fertilizer into the soil by hand, but this new machine is making the job much faster and easier.
- How did you turn the soil before the machine? By hand?
- Yeah. It would take over a month. The elevated beds cover almost half an acre.
- How much time does the machine save you?
- 70 or 80%.

Traditionally, farmers place coconut fibers in the center before planting the strawberries, but the roots might have trouble growing through it. I thought using a tiller could loosen the soil and mix the fibers in.
If the soil isn’t loose enough, strawberry roots will have trouble growing and not as many plants will survive. The tiller not only saves time, but helps more strawberries grow and can even be customized for use in elevated beds.
- How many could you plant when there were no connecting beds?
- We could only plant 3,700, but now we can plant up to 6,000.
To grow more strawberries in a limited space, farmers developed connecting channels between beds. While these channels don’t qualify for subsidies from the Agriculture and Food Agency, the tiller is expected to qualify, which could reduce farmers’ costs considerably.

“人工翻土的話,一天翻差不多二到三行,但是有翻土機的話,它一天可以翻差不多快20行。”
每年九月下旬,苗栗大湖草莓,要開始翻土施肥,種植草莓。不過以往傳統人工鬆土,是用手耙,把有機肥翻入土中,再蓋上椰土,得彎腰一整天,耗時又費力,現在有了這台翻土機事半功倍。
-以前沒有這個機器你們怎麼翻?用人工?
-對對對,差不多要一個多月,高架部分兩分地

“傳統是直接夾中間椰纖補上去就定植,草莓定植的時候怕根系長不過去,我想說有翻土機的話,可以翻鬆又可以夾在中間。”
傳統定植草莓,土壤不夠鬆軟,根系不容易發展,影響存活率。而翻土機大幅提升了草莓的定植成功率,甚至還能客製化,應用在高架草莓園。
-原本沒有連結槽之前可以種幾棵?
-只能種3千7百棵,有連結槽之後可以種到6千棵
為了節省高架草莓的種植成本,農友甚至自行研發組合式連結槽,讓有限空間能種植更多草莓苗。不過,這款組合式連結槽,還沒有納入農糧署的補助項目,但這台翻土機,預計會獲得補助,未來能大幅減輕農民負擔。
