Animal control advises cautious approach after rare civet found in Yilan

A contractor in Yilan recently discovered a two-month-old small Chinese civet in Dongshan Township. Nocturnal, slender, and secretive, it’s rare to catch sight of this Class II protected species in the wild. Unwilling to take any chances, the contractor contacted animal control, which advised people against rushing to capture any baby animals they see while outside.
This adorable baby animal greedily gulping down milk from a syringe is a small Chinese civet, a Class II protected species in Taiwan. Mostly inhabiting low-elevation mountains, these omnivorous, nocturnal creatures are elusive and tend to prefer solitude. But this little kit was discovered by a contractor working in Yilan.

The civet was found in the wild by a contractor who accidentally stepped on its tail. They picked it up right after spotting it. Seeing it was very young and unlikely to be able to care for itself, they brought it to us.
The contractor discovered the civet while doing some landscaping work for the Dongshan Township Office and urgently contacted the wildlife rescue station. Even though they’re lively, highly curious, and undeniably adorable creatures, officers warned that civets absolutely cannot be kept as pets.

The mothers will return and take their kids back. It’s easier for them to adapt to life in the wild under their mother’s care. If they’re reintroduced into the wild after being raised by humans, it will be hard for them to adapt.
The center aims to eventually release the animal back into the wild, but will perform assessments beforehand to make sure the kit grows up in good health first.

有民眾在宜蘭冬山鄉，意外發現兩個月大的麝香貓幼崽，牠是夜行性動物，體型瘦小又行跡神秘，不容易看見，加上是二級保育動物，民眾不敢大意，立刻通報防疫所，防疫所也呼籲，在野外看見野生動物幼崽，可不能急著抓。
被毛巾包裹著，大口大口地喝奶，模樣相當可愛，牠是台灣二級保育哺乳動物，麝香貓，大多棲息在淺山區，屬於雜食性，夜行性動物，喜歡單獨行動，行蹤神祕，但這隻麝香貓，卻意外被民眾發現。

“這隻麝香貓是民眾在野外，不小心踩到尾巴，然後看到以後就把牠撿起來，他也是看這個非常幼小，可能自己沒辦法照顧，所以送來我們防疫所這邊”
原來冬山鄉公所的外包廠商執行園藝工作時，草叢發現一隻麝香幼貓，緊急聯絡動植物防疫所。雖然這隻麝香貓活蹦亂跳，好奇心強，模樣超萌，但防檢所特別提醒，就算發現也不可隨意自行收養！

“母畜牠會回頭再把這些，幼小的崽崽帶回去，在母親的照顧下，牠也比較容易適應野外的環境，因為如果是人類照養的話，將來要野放，確實會造成牠們適應的問題”
防疫所將以野放作為目標，但會先進行測試在評估，期望這隻麝香貓寶寶健康長大，順利回歸大自然。
