Taiwan shares shed 1,642 points to dip below 6-month average

Taiwan shares ended October with a leap into the void, with losses across the board. The market opened to major losses, and at one point shed 1,642 points during the trading session, falling below the 6-month moving average. Bargain hunters stepped in to break the fall, but the index still closed down at 45,211 points. Institutional investors sold a net NT$139.8 billion in shares and foreign investors alone dumping NT$112.4 billion. That’s the 7th-largest net sell-off for the Taiex. Let’s hear from an analyst.

In the US, Google and Marvell did a nosedive and Intel plunged more than 23% in after-hours trading. These losses also contributed to today’s downturn in Taiwan. But this doesn’t necessarily signal a full-fledged bearish reversal. Instead, the market seems to be shifting from a one-way bullish rally into a period of range-bound trading. Today marks the first time in a year that the index falls below the six-month moving average. In previous instances this has been followed by a relatively high probability of a rebound, with stocks potentially making up some of their lost ground afterward.

With the elections drawing closer in Taiwan and the US, market trends show a relatively high chance of a rebound in November. Experts recommend focusing on fundamentals and positive industry outlooks to build a portfolio gradually, as well as setting strict loss-limits. For now, the best approach is to wait for volatility to settle before making a move.

“Google跟 Marvell(邁威爾)這些都是大跌，那英特爾甚至在盤後是跌了超過23%，所以這也造成了台股今天的跌勢。那以現階段來講的話，不太算是一個全面轉空的一個態勢，比較像是原本是單邊的多頭的行情，變成一個區間震盪。這個跌破半年線已經一年來首次。以過去的經驗來看，跌破半年線，這勝率會是比較高，後面的話如果有補漲來上來。”

隨著美台年底選舉行情逐步醞釀，歷史經驗顯示，11月反彈機率高，專家建議，可鎖定具基本面優勢，與產業展望支撐的績優標的，分批布局、嚴設停損，靜待市場沉澱後，再出發。

Comedian Huang Yi-hao ruffled feathers across the strait due to his comedic bits about Chinese leader Xi Jinping. That made him a target of a transnational repression campaign. An Chinese national identified as “K” had agreed to pay five defendants to “break the arms and legs” of Huang. After an investigation, the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office recently indicted the five suspects. On Thursday, during a standup routine, Huang detailed his horrifying experience of “cross-border repression.”

- I was just doing a comedy bit, scolding Xi Jinping a little; somehow I went from being a standup comedian to a fighter for democracy. I want to especially thank Uncle Xi for his support.

Comedian, Huang Yi-hao, made humorous jokes about Chinese leader Xi Jinping and experienced what some suspect to be transnational repression, even becoming involved in a staged traffic accident. In a recent standup routine, he openly recounts his absurd experience.

He asked me, doesn’t your foot hurt a lot? Do you want to get on my car and rest? I said, it’s okay, it’s okay. It’s good that I didn’t get on that car otherwise today would have been my memorial service.

After the accident, the driver checked on Huang every day. Despite causing the accident the driver seemed more needy than a romantic partner, making Huang feel something wasn’t right.

When my ex got into traffic accidents, I just told her to drink hot water. Later he said because my injury wasn’t too serious, I wouldn’t get the NT$200,000 in compensation. Why did they want to see my injury report? Because my injury report was his payment request form.

It turns out they weren’t being kind, and had other plans. At first, Huang thought it was an ordinary traffic accident, and both sides agreed to a settlement. The medical bill and vehicle damage came up to more than NT$200,000. Later the police felt something was off about the whole situation, and they later found that the suspect had been keeping watch on Huang for 3 days.

CIP joins with Shimajiro to produce Indigenous-language cartoons

To promote the preservation of native languages, the Council of Indigenous Peoples has partnered with the popular children’s cartoon Shimajiro to dub episodes from the series into Indigenous languages. At the premiere, Shimajiro and Mimirin were there to lead the crowd in a dance. The CIP minister and director of the Indigenous Languages Research and Development Foundation also attended to show their support.

The beloved Japanese cartoon character Shimajiro and his friend, Mimirin, lead a group of children in a dance, bringing the energy to a fever pitch. This is the premiere of the Shimajiro Indigenous language series.

Since kids these days are glued to their screens, we’re worried about what to do. How can we draw their attention? Is there nothing in our own languages?

The age before kids start school is the golden window for learning a language. To help native languages take root at a young age, the Council of Indigenous Peoples is exploring numerous avenues. This time, they worked with a beloved cartoon character to encourage kids to speak Indigenous languages along with Shimajiro.

We’ve done four languages so far, with 12 remaining. In November, we’ll be working on four of them, including Truku and Kavalan. Our preparations are done. We’ll collaborate with language talent, a voiceover association, and Shimajiro’s parent company, but they’ll make the final decision on which voice best suits the character.

The council secured official authorization from Shimajiro’s parent company in Japan to translate and dub the animations in Taiwan’s 16 officially recognized Indigenous languages. Dubs have already been made in Amis, Paiwan, Atayal, and Bunun. Officials hope that the remaining voiceovers will go smoothly, allowing Taiwan’s native languages to be passed on for generations to come.

Driver charged NT$120 after parking for nine minutes

Parking in the city is expensive, but one driver was charged NT$120 after parking for just nine minutes at Gangshan Station in Kaohsiung. The Transportation Bureau said the driver was charged for two hours because she entered before 8am and left after 8am, when the rates change. But parking lots are legally required to charge in half-hour increments, so the operator may be fined.

A driver was leaving the Gangshan Station parking lot after parking there for nine minutes, but was shocked at the price.

Ms. Huang黃 was charged NT$120 after being in the lot for less than 10 minutes. She thought there must be a mistake, but had to pay the fee to leave the lot.

The lot posted special rates for the Retrocession Day long weekend, charging NT$60 per hour, with a maximum fee of NT$250 from 8am to 10pm, and only NT$100 from 10pm to 8am. Ms. Huang entered the lot at 7:56am and left at 8:06am, but was charged for two hours of parking because she entered before 8am and left after 8am, when the rates changed.

The Transportation Bureau said it would look into the incident and may fine the operator, as parking lots are legally required to charge in half-hour increments.

Food delivered by rope along Shezidao riverside

Angling for a snack? There’s a food stall on Taipei’s Shezidao that will deliver fresh food right into your hands. But because the stairs down from the embankment are far away, the owner came up with an ingenious method so cyclists and pedestrians don’t have to walk all the way around. The shop is now enjoying a viral moment thanks to their unique delivery method.

A customer holds tight to the rope and pulls once, twice... It might look like he’s fishing, but he’s really just angling for a snack! This video is one of many shared on social media of this unique experience on Shezidao. Our reporter went to see how it works.

People get hungry after biking around the peninsula, so our shop is like a pit stop for them. There’s a staircase over there, but if they don’t feel like walking down, they can just shout their order.

The owner of this eatery uses a rope system to deliver freshly made food up onto the embankment, like a manual dumbwaiter. Since the stairs are a distance away, customers would have to take a long detour if they wanted to come down for a snack. So the owner came up with this ingeniously simple solution. But that’s not all...

The scallion pancake is pan-fried until golden brown and crispy, served with a variety of traditional snacks like tea eggs and pig’s blood cake—all handmade. The owner says she’s been in business for 17 years, starting with a stall at the tip of the peninsula.

- They used to be at the tip of the peninsula, but you can’t sell there anymore, so they moved back to their home. I’ve bought from them when passing by before.

No delivery apps required—one rope is all it takes to reel in a delicious snack. Besides satisfying hungry stomachs, this humble eatery also provides their customers with a unique experience.

Legendary TV host speaks up about standing up to LGBT+ oppression

Veteran TV host Kevin Tsai is speaking out after his recent appearances at political events for both major parties in Taipei captured headlines. In a candid interview, Tsai opened up about why he chose to step into the political arena, the personal price he has paid, and why he believes standing up for the LGBTQ+ community is worth the fight. His heartfelt remarks have struck a chord with viewers, drawing more than a million views in less than 24 hours.

Kevin Tsai was one of the first high-profile Taiwanese entertainers to come out as gay. It was partly the reason why he decided to become more involved in politics.

Wang said he had heard that Tsai got into politics because he was furious after Taipei police raided several gay bars in Ximen earlier this month. Tsai confirmed that was indeed the case, saying, “What else could I do?” adding that “If we stop caring, we’ll just be letting teens aged 17 and 18 keep getting oppressed to death.” As a publicly out figure under the spotlight, he said he felt the need to resist. If he doesn’t stand his ground, he says, how are kids supposed to tell their parents that being gay is OK?

On Friday, Taipei Mayoral Candidate Puma Shen says he was deeply touched by Tsai’s words.

Though we look like leaders of the first country in Asia to pass a law to legalize same-sex marriage, there is room for improvement in many areas when it comes to LGBT+ issues. What Kevin Tsai said yesterday was extremely moving. I think the government should take these issues very seriously and tactfully, to create an inclusive environment. This is a responsibility the government must shoulder and it is something I will continue working towards in the future.

Kevin Tsai’s interview racked up more than 1 million views in less than 24 hours. Among the people responding to it was the Taipei 101 Chairwoman Janet Chia. She took to social media, saying that she adored Kevin Tsai, saying that his words had let her see the power of intellectuals and the depth of a truly cultivated soul. Other commenters said the interview had made them emotional and brought them to tears. Others praised Tsai’s calm demeanor and unwavering courage. Others said Tsai’s words showed he was a person with a heart of gold and a spine of steel.

Blummenfelt and Iden blessed at Shunze Temple before Ironman

Norway’s star triathlon duo, Gustav Iden and Kristian Blummenfelt have returned to Taiwan for the first time in four years. On Friday morning, the two visited Shunze Temple in Changhua County’s Puyan Township. The Temple prepared 500 memorial caps to honor the “10-time Consecutive Champions,” to give to the fans that crowded the streets.

The roads in front of Shunze Temple are packed with fans; they arrived to welcome two incredible athletes. In 2019, Norwegian Ironman, Gustav Iden wore a cap from the Shunze Temple in Changhua’s Puyan Township and went on to win a world championship- sparking a craze for the “champion cap.” After 4 years, Iden and his senior, Kristian Blummenfelt, have returned to the temple for the third time.

The two Ironman athletes will head further south to Kenting to compete in the International Triathlon starting on Nov 1. The popularity around championship commemorative caps has created more enthusiasm for sports like triathlons.
