Efforts to bring back Formosan landlocked salmon succeeding

2026-10-30

Last year, conservationist from Wuling Farm released 240 juvenile Formosan landlocked salmon upstream in the Sqeran River. A year later, the team found the salmon had grown large and healthy with excellent reproductive potential, showing that efforts to bring the endangered species back are succeeding.

A helicopter flies above the upper reaches of the Sqeran River, releasing 240 baby Formosan landlocked salmon, an endangered endemic species, into the wild.

A year later, conservationists put on snorkeling gear and checked on how the salmon are doing. They found the fish were large and healthy, happy that their efforts to protect the endangered species were succeeding.

We got very encouraging results when we investigated the salmon while snorkeling. About 50% of the salmon had survived, and the ones we saw were healthy and plump, and already showing signs of reproducing.

The Sqeran River was once a habitat for Formosan landlocked salmon, but dams built along the river prevented fish from swimming upstream to reproduce. When a dam downstream was destroyed by natural causes, the conservation center considered reintroducing salmon to the river.

We’ve seen very encouraging results this year. If the salmon can withstand the typhoons in October, we will have completed the final piece of Shei-Pa National Park’s 30-year effort to restore Formosan landlocked salmon to the five streams in the upper Dajia River where they once lived.

The Formosan landlocked salmon has made a strong comeback after years of conservation efforts, with more than 16,000 fish now breeding in the wild. With the population recovering, conservationists are completing the final piece of the restoration efforts.
