The Tokyo Olympics came to a close on Sunday. Taiwanese athletes wrapped up the Games with a record medal haul of two golds, four silvers, and six bronzes, finishing 34th worldwide and 6th among Asian countries. But the awards don’t just end there -- the Taiwan government will award outstanding Olympians and their coaches with bonuses totaling NT$208.55 million, a record amount.

The previous records of five medals were set in Sydney in 2000, and Athens in 2004. The new record of 12 not only more than doubled the previous amounts, the number of categories had likewise expanded to six sports, namely badminton, judo, gymnastics, golf, boxing, and karate.
