Premier Su sets off on two-month campaign tour of Taiwan

2022-09-26

Premier Su Tseng-chang on Sunday kicked off a tour of Taiwan to raise support for DPP candidates in the upcoming local elections. Observers say Su’s goal is to sway undecided voters to keep important urban constituencies in Northern Taiwan under DPP control. They say that if the DPP loses Taoyuan, Keelung and Hsinchu City, Su may come under pressure to resign from the Executive Yuan.

A few days before Taiwan’s Teachers’ day, President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Su Tseng-chang handed out awards to outstanding educators in Taiwan. They thanked teachers for their contributions, reiterating the government’s commitment to education.

Su Tseng-chang
Premier
Under the Tsai administration, our budget for education has grown every year, to reach almost NT$350 billion today. Now every class has an internet connection, and every student has access to a tablet.

The premier touted his achievements in office, from battling African swine fever, promoting programs for agriculture, and boosting Taiwan’s medical resources.

Su Tseng-chang
Premier
There are still 61 days until Election Day. During this time, I will go on a tour around Taiwan. My first stop is Yunlin County. The theme for this election campaign is to take care of the future of Taiwan, our land and our people.

With around two months to go until the local elections, Su says he’s going on a campaign tour to sway undecided voters. Analysts say his goal may be to keep DPP constituencies under DPP control, especially Keelung, Taoyuan and Hsinchu City in Northern Taiwan. Pundits say that if the DPP loses those three elections, Premier Su, who is the longest-serving head of the Executive Yuan, may face calls to resign as premier. This tour around Taiwan, they say, is a way to ensure his position in the central government.

Su Tseng-chang
Premier
What we want to do is promote the performance and efficiency of the Executive Yuan. It’s not about the elections. The ones in charge of the election are those at party central.

Premier Su touted his achievements in office over the past few years, saying that no elections would tarnish his work.
