Taiwan shares close below 13,000-point mark, NT dollar continues depreciating

2022-10-17

Taiwan shares opened low and close down on Monday, after choppy trading on Wall Street on Friday. TSMC shares shed 3.64%, falling below NT$400. Largan Precision, MediaTek, UMC as well as the three leading shipping companies all saw major losses as well. All in all, the index closed down 162 points at 12,966, on turnover of NT$206.7 billion. Let’s hear from an analyst.

Lin Han-wei
Financial analyst
I think there is a bit of a confidence crisis, because TSMC shares have fallen below NT$400. On top of that, the three leading shipping companies posted their lowest price to earnings ratios. They almost closed limit-down. I think this kind of situation of course would cause investors to lose some confidence and some may sell off their shares.

Over in the foreign exchange market, the new Taiwan dollar continued to depreciate. The Taiwan currency at one point hit a low of 32 against the U.S. dollar during intra-day trading. With intervention from the central market, it bounced back somewhat to close down 0.113 at NT$31.997 against the greenback.
