If you want to catch the first rays of sunlight of the year on Jan. 1, get your warm clothes ready and prepare for a hike. According to the Taipei Astronomical Museum, the first rays of sun of 2023 will shine down on Hualiens’ Maxi Mountain at 6:03 a.m.

But with the summit of the mountain standing at an altitude of 3,443 meters, it’s not a trip for the faint hearted. For revelers who would rather see the first sunrise from the plains, there are other options. The sun will rise on Taitung’s Sanxiantai only a few minutes later, at 6:10 a.m. Of course actually seeing the sun will depend on the weather on Jan. 1.
