‘Minimal care’ frameworks considered at Taiwan-Japan Aging Society Forum 2022

Taiwan is forecast to officially become a “super-aged society” in 2025. Business Today magazine has held a Taiwan-Japan Aging Society Forum for the last six years. This year, old age care expert Shigeru Fujiwara inspired Taiwanese professionals with the idea of “Minimal Care” frameworks. The system encourages older adults to retain more agency later in life. Traditionally, we thought that filial piety, or being a good son or daughter, meant doing everything for your parents. But that means older adults lose their capacities faster. If you let older people do everything themselves, then they have agency and can take care of themselves until the day they die. Everyone should be psychologically prepared for that in our aging society.

The figures suggest Taiwan will officially become a ‘super-aged society’ in 2025. Taiwan is also facing a crisis in care for older adults, people with dementia, and healthcare.

The aging of society creates more healthcare requirements, including dementia and long-term care. I think Taiwan is not sufficiently prepared for that. Our government and society should all be proactively turning toward the issues of an aged society.

Many older adults lose muscle power and may spend the day in bed. To slow down aging processes, doctors say you should start taking care of your health as early as possible. An appropriate amount of exercise and good nutrition are important.

A big reason for aging is that our body is in a state of chronic inflammation, and perhaps our digestive tract isn’t healthy. So we recommend that people take extra anti-inflammatory foods, such as nuts, fish oils and deep sea fish which contain omega oils. And there are lots of fruit and vegetables containing different phytochemicals.

This nutritionist recommends that older adults consume extra probiotics and dietary fiber to maintain good digestive health, which will help keep you feeling stronger for longer.

台灣即將在2025年邁入超高齡社會,其中65歲以上長者佔9成6,長照、失智問題越來越嚴重,知名周刊連續六年舉辦台日交流論壇,今年特別跨海邀請日本日照中心社長藤原茂,分享"減法照護",讓長者擁有生活自理能力並找回自信,也呼籲政府和社會要更重視人口老化的所面臨的問題。

“我們以前傳統都覺得,孝順就是有事弟子服其勞。結果,長者反而退化的更快,讓長者凡事能夠自己來,那他一直到走的一天都有自理能力,是我們面臨高齡化社會,每個人都應該有的心理準備”

根據統計,台灣2025年將邁入超高齡社會,社會也面臨著長照、失智、醫療的問題。

“人口老化會帶來更大的醫療需求,甚至會有失智、會有長照。那我想台灣在這方面的準備都不夠的,我們政府社會都應該更積極的面對高齡化的問題”

許多老年人肌肉無力,常常躺在床上,要延緩老化,醫師強調要越早開始保養越好,除了適量運動,也要特別注意營養攝取。

“老化很大的原因就是我們身體處於一個慢性發炎的狀況,還有我們腸胃道可能不健康,所以會建議大家補充一些抗發炎的食品,像是一些含Omega脂肪酸的堅果、魚油、深海魚,然後還有一些含有各種不一樣植化素的蔬菜水果”

營養師也建議,老年人能多補充益生菌或膳食纖維,保持腸胃健康,人就不易變老。
