Hsiao Back in Taiwan Taiwan de facto ambassador says no plans made for McCarthy visit

2023-02-07

Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to Washington Hsiao Bi-khim is back in Taiwan for a short visit. The representative was recently spotted in Washington going to the office of U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. An expert say that the meeting and the recent rise in U.S.-China tensions over a suspected Chinese spy balloon could raise the likelihood of a Taiwan visit by McCarthy. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Hsiao said she had not heard any concrete plan for a Taiwan visit. Let’s hear from her.

Hsiao Bi-khim
Taiwan’s representative to the US
So far, his office has not yet brought up any concrete plan with us. The spy balloon has really come as a shock to American society. In Taiwan, we have these kinds of gray-zone provocations on the daily. So I think this can bring a deeper understanding for our situation.

Reports have claimed that Hsiao’s visit to Taiwan has a political undertone, perhaps to prepare to run as vice president together with Lai Ching-te in 2024. Hsiao did not comment on the matter, saying she was here to attend to administrative affairs. She added that the U.S. hoped Taiwan’s presidential candidates will be ones that Washington can work together with to protect freedom and democracy.

2023-02-07
