High-calorie, high-protein diet is the key to living happily with dialysis: doctors

New figures show more than 90,000 people in Taiwan are currently undergoing dialysis. While it’s highly invasive, the proceedure is an effective way to treat kidney problems. The downside is many people get fatigue or anemia when on dialysis. But doctors say that getting a good, high-calorie diet full of protein is the key to living a full life with dialysis. We spoke to nephrologist Wang Shu-min to find out more.

After dialysis, we need to focus on protein intake. So after dialysis, patients need to replenish themselves by eating lots of protein. Otherwise, as far as drinks go, they can benefit from L-carnitine, taurine, folates, B12, and iron. It’s easy to get anemia when you’re on dialysis, and these supplements will also help remedy anemia.

Doctors say dialysis can cause the body to lose calories, protein, and many other nutrients. Patients often get fatigue, anemia, and other symptoms. But a high daily intake of calories and protein can help.

In principle, as long as our dialysis patients take good care of their nutrition, and their energy, then dialysis is not fatal. Certain functions that dialysis handles are given to a machine temporarily, and when that’s complete, of course we can recover the social worth that we originally occupied.

Stats from the Health Promotion Administration show that more than 90,000 people in Taiwan are undergoing dialysis. But doctors say that with a good diet and care for health and fitness, there’s plenty of life and energy for dialysis patients.

洗腎容易流失體力醫生建議:可適量補充高蛋白

台灣洗腎人口約有9萬多人,「洗腎率」在國際間名列前茅;醫生指出,洗腎患者在進行血液透析時,會造成體內熱量、蛋白質及多種營養素流失,為了避免營養不良,可適量補充高熱量、高蛋白的食物或飲品,並要注意飲食均衡的原則,太鹹的、太甜的,最好別碰。

大片雞胸肉、一顆溏心蛋,再搭配深綠色蔬菜、木耳和地瓜,是營養的一餐。醫生說,洗腎患者,飲食更應該特別注意。

“洗腎後的部分,就是要重視蛋白質的攝取,所以洗腎後的患者就是要高蛋白的補充。那高蛋白之外,飲品的部分,我們可以補充像肉酸、牛磺酸、葉酸、B12、鐵的含量,對洗腎後的病人,也是容易貧血的患者,也是會增加貧血的改善。”

醫生指出,血液透析會造成體內熱量、蛋白質及多種營養素流失,導致常出現疲倦、貧血等症狀,日常飲食可適量攝取高熱量以及高蛋白。

“原則上我們洗腎的患者,只要把自己的營養顧好,體力顧得好的話,洗腎絕對不是絕症,我們把腎臟該做的功能交由機器做完之後,我們當然可以恢復到我們本來應該做的社會價值。”

根據衛生福利部國民健康署的資料顯示,台灣洗腎人口約有9萬多人,只要注意飲食,做好自身的健康控管,一樣可以過正常的生活。
