Politicians and NGOs protest at the WHA demanding Taiwan’s admittance to the assembly

2023-05-21

This year’s World Health Assembly opened on Sunday in Geneva, and once again, Taiwan has been barred from the international health forum. Undeterred, local Taiwanese expats and members of the Taiwan United Nations Alliance were on the ground to voice their protest and drum up support. On Sunday, participants held a walking event, during which they ran into WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom.

Members of the alliance and Taiwanese expats happened to cross paths with the WHO head. Legislators and city councilors from both sides of the aisle and members of the public were taking part in the "Walk the Talk" event in Geneva, expressing Taiwan’s determination to join the world health body. However, when our reporter tried to get close to Tedros and asked him if Taiwan had a chance to become an observer, the secretary general brushed him off. A man close to him then immediately blocked our reporter and prevented him from following the Ethiopian doctor.
