Heat-related illness cases surge as temperatures climb

With the scorching heat of the last few days, the number of heat-related illnesses has been on the rise. The Ministry of Health says there have been 276 reported cases of heat injury in the last two weeks, and they involved mostly older adults. Doctors are reminding the public to be sure to stay hydrated when heading outside.

Don’t work or exercise for too long in an environment that is too hot or too humid. You should stay in the shade or someplace cool, and have enough drinking water, to maintain a balance between the water and electrolytes in your system.

Besides staying hydrated when being outdoors, doctors recommend using an umbrella with UV-protection to prevent exposure to direct sunlight, so as to cut down on the risk of heat-related illnesses.

最近幾天,全台高溫炎熱,造成熱傷害人數節節攀升,根據衛福部統計6月近兩個禮拜,熱傷害已達276人次,當中又以長者居多,醫師提醒外出一定要記得多部充水分,嚴防熱傷害。

“不管是在任何方面,(長者)他們的代謝,他們的循環都很差,而且通常老一輩的人也都有代謝症候群、三高這些問題。”

“不要在太高溫、太潮濕的環境之下,工作或者是運動過久。應該找個特別陰涼的地方,要有足夠的飲水,讓你的水分、電解質不要失去平衡。”

醫師提醒外出時多補充水分,撐傘,避免陽光直接曝曬,才能把熱傷害風險,降到最低。
