Malaysian educator and cultural advocate raises cross-cultural understanding

And now we meet educator and cultural advocate Ng Chor Soon. The Malaysian-born teacher has lived in Taiwan for 32 years, and built a thriving career teaching English and Malay. He first came to Taiwan to study, then met his future wife, and decided never to leave. He is passionate about creating transcultural understanding through education and exchange, offering his services to all those who want to foster deeper ties with Malaysia.
Whether the class has one student or 20, educator Ng Chor Soon is equally passionate. His extensive lesson planning enables students to learn through games and interactive exercises. Today’s class is all about “Malaysian New Year,” comparing Lunar New Year traditions in Malaysia and Taiwan.

Malay people in Malaysia wrap up their lucky money like this. This is called a “green envelope,” because that’s the lucky color.
Second-year student Tseng Yun-hsi has a Taiwanese father and a Chinese-Malaysian mother. When she visits family in Malaysia, she wants to be able to speak Malay with her relatives. She’s in her second year of studies with Ng.

I don’t do this for the money. It’s about passion and vision. I think that if I can teach children English, and at the same time promote new immigrant languages, and share with people that I’m from Malaysia, then what could be a greater joy?
Ng also offers professional training services in new immigrant issues and cultural diversity. He can often be seen on college campuses and at new immigrant events, serving up his delicious cooking or telling traditional Malaysian stories.

I always tell people, this dish is from my homeland and it’s called nasi lemak, coconut rice. “Nasi” means rice in Malay, and “lemak” is coconut milk.
Ng came to study in Taiwan in 1992. Then he married and built a career here. It’s been 32 years now. As a professional English teacher and cultural advocate, he jokes that his career is a “sparkling rich life” and a blessing from god.

Some people ask me, do you prefer sunny, rainy or cloudy days? I can categorically say “none of the above.” Having my husband here makes every day the best day. So I’m very grateful that he takes care of us, and for all his hard work and sacrifice for this family.

美語老師投入馬來語教學 樂當馬來文化推手

馬來西亞新住民黃祖順，1992年以留學生身份來到臺灣唸書，因為找到生命中的另一半，在臺灣落地生根32年。長期從事兒童美語教學的他，也擔任馬來語支援教師及多元文化培力講師，透過互動性學習及美食料理說故事，推廣馬來文化。
儘管只有一位學生，黃祖順不減教學熱忱，準備完整的上課計畫，讓孩子在遊戲互動中學習。這天上課的主題是”馬來西亞過新年”，比較了台灣跟馬來西亞農曆過新年的差異。

“我們在馬來西亞的馬來人用這個來包壓歲錢，叫青包，因為青包是他們的吉祥顏色”
二年級的曾筠睎，媽媽是馬來西亞華僑，爸爸臺灣人，他希望回馬來西亞時，能夠跟親戚們說馬來話，跟黃老師學馬來語已經第二年。

“我去做這個不是因為錢的關係，是一股熱情，一種嚮往，我覺得如果我能夠當兒童美語老師，現在又能夠推廣新住民語言，分享告訴人家我是來自馬來西亞，那何樂而不為呢”
也是新住民多元文化人才培訓講師的黃祖順，經常在校園裡或者新住民文化活動中，透過拿手的美食跟大家說馬來文化的故事。

“我都會跟人家講，這一道我家鄉的食物叫做nasi lemak，他是椰漿飯。nasi在馬來西亞叫米飯，lemak是椰漿”

”有人問我說，你喜歡晴天、雨天、陰天中的哪一天？我可以很篤定的回答都不是，只要我先生在的每一天，都是最好的一天，所以很感謝他對於我們的照顧，跟對於這個家的努力付出”
