Tsai, Lai address Copenhagen Democracy Summit 2024

Taiwan’s outgoing and incoming presidents spoke at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit on Tuesday, at the invitation of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation. Both emphasized that despite the threat from China, Taiwan was determined to defend its democracy. Let’s hear from them.

We will work to safeguard the status quo on both sides. I will not rule out dialogue with China on the principles of mutual respect, mutual benefits, and dignity, with no preconditions. … we must not repeat the failures of the past that led to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We cannot take lightly the threats of the authoritarian states. Nor can we bow down to their expansion. Instead, we should strengthen our freedom and democracy; our own economies and resilience; and our mutual cooperation for the benefit of our people.

The PRC thought by routinizing cyberattacks, hacking, and military intrusions, the people of Taiwan would either be debilitated by fear or become numb and complacent. That was certainly not the case. Despite this, the people of Taiwan are more determined than ever to safeguard democracy and freedom.

President Tsai said that under the leadership of President-elect Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s government and its people would continue to do their utmost to advance freedom and democracy worldwide.

Scams, inflation among public’s top priorities for incoming government: survey

What do people want most from the incoming government? They want a crackdown on scams, according to a recent poll. In a survey commissioned by RWNews, scams came in as the top public priority, with nearly 50% of respondents listing it. Other high concerns were inflation, school bullying, cross-strait relations, and air pollution.

Joined by Vice Premier-designate Cheng Li-chiun, Vice President Lai Ching-te attended Cybersec 2024 to show support for the cybersecurity industry.

Taiwan is the country in the world that’s targeted most by disinformation. But here’s some good news. This allows us to fortify our cybersecurity industry and put ourselves in a more advantageous position compared to other countries.

According to a recent poll, cyberattacks and disinformation are a top public priority.

Online media outlet RWNews asked the public which reforms they wanted to see the incoming government prioritize. Nearly 50% said they hoped to see action against scams. More than 40% wanted policies against inflation, bullying, cross-strait relations and pollution.

It shows that those five issues are of high concern to the general public. It means four in 10 people care about these five issues.

Respondents were asked which national policies needed the most improvement or change. Economic and financial policies came out on top, with 40.3% asking for change. In second place was domestic affairs and security, with 31.1%. Third was social welfare and labor policies, with 28.5%.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ winner Nymphia Wind performs at Presidential Office

Nymphia Wind, the winner of Season 16 of "RuPaul’s Drag Race," made history on Wednesday as the first drag queen to perform at the Presidential Office. Wearing her signature yellow, Nymphia staged a lip sync extravaganza with the members of her drag house. She thanked President Tsai for her contributions over the past eight years, calling Tsai a mother figure for Taiwan.

Nymphia Wind entertains the audience, flipping and splitting in high heels.

The skirt comes off, turning up the energy to the max.

By incorporating Taiwanese elements into the outfits she designed herself, Nymphia impressed the judges and fans of the show from all over the world. Her performances always contain an element of defiance, of resistance against discrimination in society. Taiwan to send delegation to Geneva despite WHA exclusion

Due to Chinese oppression, Taiwan will be excluded from the World Health Assembly for the eighth year in a row. The 77th WHA opens in Geneva on May 27. Taiwan has yet to receive an invitation, and it missed the registration deadline on Monday. Despite the exclusion, Taiwan will send a non-governmental advocacy group to the Swiss city, to advocate for its people’s rights on the sidelines.

Too much time has been wasted by the WHO. Its exclusion of Taiwan from the WHA has become an act of humiliation. This is the time to open the doors to Taiwan, a global model for health care.

We know that internationally, the voices supporting Taiwan’s WHA inclusion are only getting louder. All of our medical groups are joining hands and hearts, as we push onward in pursuit of our goal.

After taking office as health minister, Chiu will lead an advocacy group to Geneva.

The 77th WHA will take place from May 27 to June 1. This year’s summit will focus on climate change as a global health issue, among five other priorities. Due to Chinese pressure, the WHA has not invited Taiwan to participate for eight consecutive years. Beijing claims that Taiwan has no right to participate without central government approval. The argument has provoked strong reactions from Taiwan lawmakers.

Since the pandemic, we have realized that the health issues we will face in the future are global and intergenerational. Therefore, for the welfare of Taiwan’s next generation and all future generations worldwide, we must all work together.

The Mainland Affairs Council has issued a stern protest against China’s campaign to exclude Taiwan from the WHA. It accused China of distorting the “one China” principle to exclude Taiwan from the international community, at the cost of the Taiwanese people’s safety and well-being. Given such actions, Beijing has no right to speak on cross-strait harmony, MAC’s statement read.

Following the presidential inauguration, Taiwan’s WHA advocacy group will set off for Geneva, to speak out for the medical rights and interests of the people.

MOCA holds exhibition discussing urban migration

Wealthy Taipei may be the capital city of Taiwan but have you ever looked at it from the perspective of a homeless person or a student? The Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei is holding an exhibition exploring the experiences of poor people who have migrated to Taipei over the last half century and the subsequent process of urbanization. Through a series of installations, "Poor People’s Taipei: Transfer Station" explores the capital’s shadowy underbelly. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

The first section of this exhibition focuses on the voices of urban Indigenous people, homeless people and migrant workers. This work "What Brings You Here" is an installation with a timeline showcasing quotes of people who migrated to Taipei from the 1970s to today.

Taipei is a city with many immigrants. When did everyone come to this city? What are their thoughts and perceptions about this city? They collected interviews of homeless people, Indigenous people, and migrant workers. They also discovered why young people, college students or people from other places came to Taipei.

Another work "Luma" is a workers’ shed. Inside the shed are objects and videos to shed light on the experiences of urban Indigenous people. Beginning in the 1960s, urbanization created job opportunities and attracted people from central and southern Taiwan to relocate to Taipei. The exhibition is divided into three sections and recounts people’s urban migration journeys through a series of installations and interviews.

This exhibition is divided into three areas. Because the name of the exhibition is called Transfer Station, we want to start by telling the story of people coming to Taipei after getting off the station. The first exhibition area talks about those who live in this city who are unknown to the public. We recorded the stories of these workers or tribesmen. The second area of the exhibition is about the lifestyle of homeless people or people from poor families. How they are seen from the outside world and how they are treated by society? The third exhibition area is about the future.

Poor People’s Taipei: Transfer Station will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art until June 16.
