Lai visits conscripts, receives his own training report from 40 years ago

Taiwan extended its conscription period this year due to concerns about China’s rising threat. On Friday, President Lai Ching-te paid a visit to a batch of recruits completing the new one-year conscription period. He inspected the results of conscript training at the Chenggong Ling military base in Taichung, where he himself was trained 40 years ago.

Over the last seven weeks, the conscripts not only learned basic combat skills, but also how to administer first aid on themselves and others on the battlefield. President Lai Ching-te visited the Chenggong Ling military camp to inspect the results of their training.
Chenggong Ling was where Lai himself had trained after being admitted to university. During his visit on Friday, he was surprised by a blast from the past.
Lai smiled as he examined his training evaluation report from 1980. He left camp with a high score of 89.63.
This old photo shows a youthful Lai standing on sentry duty. After completing his training, he went to Kinmen to serve as a military medical officer. Speaking at Chenggong Ling, Lai recalled his time in the military.

When I served, we slept in wide beds and everyone was crowded together. There was no air conditioning when the weather was hot, so it was quite hard. Times have progressed and I’m very happy. Whether it’s the accommodation that all of you live in or training equipment, in the future we will keep making progress. We want to provide good living conditions and even better training.
Lai stressed that Taiwan is committed to peace. But in the face of authoritarian threats from China, Taiwan must be prepared, he said, adding that the more sweat a soldier sheds in training, the more secure the nation will be.

為了因應中國日益嚴重的武力威脅，我國自今年恢復義務役一年，至今已經接訓5梯。總統賴清德今天首度到部隊視察新兵訓練，地點就在當年自己新訓的成功嶺，軍方找出40多年前總統的結訓成績單，總統也回憶起當兵睡大通鋪的日子。

7周入伍訓練下來，新兵不只具備基本戰鬥技能，還要學習戰傷如何自救、救人，總統賴清德親自到成功嶺來視導訓練成果。
成功嶺是總統賴清德當年考上大學後的大專兵新訓地點，軍方貼心送上意外的驚喜。
賴總統仔細端詳、笑得靦腆，原來拿到的是自己1980年在成功嶺新訓的成績單，以89.63的高分結訓。

“(我當年服役時)我們睡通舖，然後大家擠在一起，天氣熱的時候沒有冷氣，所以相對來講比較辛苦。時代在進步，我也很高興，我們國軍不管各位住的房舍，或者訓練的儀器，未來我們會接續，希望大家有個好的生活空間設備，給你們更好的訓練”
總統強調台灣熱愛和平，但是面對極權主義威脅，不能不做準備，軍人多流一滴汗，國家就多一分安全。
