
Probiotics aren’t just for gut health. In Yunlin County, they helped to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from growing rice. In an experiment by the local government and National Chung Hsing Univerity, probiotics were fed to rice fields. Initial results showed a reduction of 92% for methane emission and no negative side effects on yields.

The probiotics reduce methane emissions. It also allows us to use less nitrogen fertilizer. That’s very good for keeping the plants’ root systems healthy.
That’s right, rice fields are jumping on the probiotics trend. Besides improving the growth of the rice, the probiotics can help reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

We hope to find a method that can cut down on greenhouse gas emissions without affecting yields.
The Yunlin County government is working to achieve net-zero emissions. To reduce emissions in the agriculture sector, it collaborated with National Chung Hsing University to promote probiotic use on eco-friendly farms in Dapi Township. As part of an experiment, probiotics were added to rice paddies. A section of the paddies were covered with an airtight lid to monitor emissions.

We found that adding probiotics to rice fields greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. We will continue with the experiment for our second rice crop.
Results are out for the experiment’s first rice crop. Methane emissions were reduced by 92% and nitrous oxide emissions by 80%. Experiments will continue over the second crop’s cycle, to verify that probiotics can indeed reduce harmful emissions.

益生菌不只人可以吃,水稻也行,雲林縣與中興大學合作,在大埤鄉試驗,稻作生長期,加入益生菌,減少溫室氣體排放,結果出爐,發現二氧化碳總排放量大幅下降,農民也發現,可以減少氮肥使用,而且產量不受影響,達到雙贏。

沒聽錯,水稻跟上流行,也吃益生菌,除了讓水稻長得更健康之外,最主要目的,是要減少溫室氣體排放。
