Lai says Taiwan incomplete without Indigenous culture

Today is Aug. 1, Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The government marked the occasion with a summit at Taipei’s Grand Hotel. During the event, the Indigenous affairs minister touted government efforts to build a just and peaceful society for all. President Lai Ching-te attended the ceremony in traditional Indigenous attire. Let’s hear from him.

I stood with the Indigenous people of Taiwan even before becoming president. Today, I express my support and gratitude to Taiwan’s Indigenous people through concrete actions. Without Indigenous cultures, the culture of Taiwan is incomplete.

We wish to rectify the name of the Pingpu tribes very soon. Second, we’re continuing to promote autonomy for Indigenous peoples. We’re expanding health care services for Indigenous peoples to extend life expectancy.
About 300 Indigenous representatives attended the summit. They included councilors, personnel from local-level Indigenous agencies, and leaders of the 55 Indigenous districts. The Indigenous affairs minister gave a keynote address in the morning. That was followed by reports on the Pingpu identity, the Spatial Planning Act, and social security for the Indigenous peoples.

8月1日原住民族日，原民會特別在台北圓山飯店，盛大舉辦「全國原住民族政策高峰會」，主委曾智勇除了向凱米颱風災區區長表達感謝，也強調持續推動"國家希望工程"。總統賴清德則特別穿原民服飾出席，強調"有原民文化，台灣文化才會完整。

“在擔任總統之前，我都跟原住民朋友站在一起，今天我用行動，表達對原住民朋友的關心支持跟感謝，有原住民的文化，台灣的文化才會完整。”

“平埔族群，我們希望很快的時間能給他們正名。第二，我們持續推動我們原住民族自治，我們對原住民族健康能做更多服務，讓我們原住民平均餘命能提高。”
「全國原住民族政策高峰會」今年首度邀請全國原民議員、各縣市原民機關代表，及 55 位原民地區代表會主席等共300人參加。上午除了主委的專題演講，下午也安排三場專題報告，探討平埔族群身分、國土計畫法，及社會安全網等族人關切的議題。
