Not all heroes wear capes, and not all Olympic stars compete in a sport. This year in Paris, a Taiwanese coach is shining bright on the sidelines, as a referee. Wu Yu-ting is a taekwondo coach from Miaoli County. She passed a rigorous evaluation process to become a taekwondo referee for the Paris Olympics. Let’s hear from her.

The process started in Asia, where there were nearly 100 referees under consideration. The Top 14 in Asia advanced, pooled into the Top 58 from the five continents. Over the course of two to three years, these final 58 referees were cut down to 26 referees for the Paris Olympics.

We were so happy when she was chosen. From the bottom of our hearts, we want her to win glory for Taiwan and shine bright on the Olympic stage.
Wu is the first Taiwanese national to serve more than one Olympics as a referee. Her first stint was in 2021, during the Tokyo Games. She began her taekwondo journey at age 5, learning from her father, a taekwondo master. Wu is currently a fifth-degree black belt, with both national and international refereeing certificates.
