A new A-list celebrity has become Taiwan’s latest tourism ambassador in South Korea. It’s K-pop idol Kyuhyun, from the popular boy band Super Junior. At a press event on Friday, the pop star discussed his favorite things about Taiwan, as well as his scary experience with not one but two earthquakes this week.

I’ve come to Taiwan many times before. Now I’m finally a tourism ambassador, and I’m thrilled about it. It’s my mission to get more people to know about the beauty of Taiwan.

Kyuhyun had visited Taiwan many times in the past for work and would use his down time to see everything the island has to offer. He says Taiwan is packed with beautiful places, as well as delicious food, of course.

The K-pop star’s top three Taiwan bites are danbing with cheese, soy milk with fried youtiao and beef noodles. He sure has good taste. In this latest visit he also experienced a scarier side of Taiwan: earthquakes.

When the earthquake struck yesterday, I was at a shooting location, inside a building. Today in the morning, I felt the hotel swaying as well. I was very scared. I was wondering whether I should rush out or not.

Kyuhyun says he didn’t know what to do. Fortunately, it was no more than a fright. The idol says that he hopes to use his personal channel to show viewers more tourist destinations in Taiwan such as Hualien.

為了吸引韓國人來台旅遊，觀光署邀請人氣韓團Super Junior成員圭賢，擔任韓國市場台灣觀光代言人，由於週四圭賢就抵達台灣，卻接連2天台灣都發生地震，他坦言地震當下相當害怕。

用中文跟大家打招呼，韓國人氣男團Super Junior成員，圭賢，受邀擔任韓國市場台灣觀光代言人。

圭賢過去因為工作關係多次造訪台灣，自己也會趁工作空檔，四處踩點，稱讚台灣有很多很美的地方，當然少不了台灣美食。

圭賢透露自己最愛的台灣美食前三名就是起司蛋餅、豆漿油條和牛肉麵，真的很懂吃，不過這兩天來台，恰巧遇上地震，圭賢也受到不小驚嚇。

“地震發生時，昨天我在拍攝現場，在一個建築物裡面，今天早上七點半，那時候我感覺整個飯店在搖晃，當下很害怕，在想要逃跑嗎，還是不要跑”

坦言當下不知所措，幸好最後平安度過，他也許願未來想在個人頻道介紹花蓮等更多台灣景點。

Big party and grand parade celebrate the athletic heroes of Taiwan

Now that Taiwanese athletes have returned home from the Paris Olympics with two golds and five bronzes, Friday was the perfect time to kick back and party. The Presidential Office and the General Association of Chinese Culture worked together to put on a party and a parade for the heroes of Team Taiwan. One of the attendees was President Lai Ching-te, who was decked out in a track suit as he presented gifts and kind words to Taiwan’s finest athletes.

The Honor Guard stood at the entrance of the Presidential Office, creating a saber arch for Taiwan’s Olympic heroes. Wearing a track suit, head of state turned sports fan President Lai Ching-te received the national team athletes. In addition to gifting them Taiwanese-themed souvenirs and taking the time to chat, Lai also said yes to every photo request.

Among the attendees was Chuang Chih-yuan, who has long dreamed of being an orchard farmer. As a gift, President Lai presented him with sliced pineapples and apples, drawing a smile from the 43-year-old athlete. The back-to-back gold medal winning badminton duo of Wang Chi-lin and Lee Yang have already played their swan song, and so Wang dedicated his solo vocal performance to his long-term partner Lee.

Hailed as the Taiwanese boxing queen, Lin Yu-ting took on both constant criticism and unrelenting opponents on her difficult road to victory in Paris.

Lai heaped praise upon Lin Yu-ting for embodying the high-minded grace of the Taiwanese people. His kind words had Lin on the verge of tears.

During the afternoon parade, confetti was seemingly raining down from the sky and the procession was parting the sea of roadside fans waving flags. Taipei’s Guanqian Road could’ve been mistaken for a street carnival.

With Lin Yu-ting at the front, the procession headed out from the Presidential Office. A total of 67 athletes, coaches, and support staff members took part in the parade.

The excitement of being able to see the Olympians in the flesh was written on the faces of the crowd. Video footage taken from a bird’s eye view showed just how grand the event was. The parade and the fair weather provided the perfect ending to this year’s Olympics.

Democratic VP nominee Tim Walz’s China ties

U.S. Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz’s ties to China will likely inform his work if elected. But where does he stand on key issues? And how does Beijing see him? VOA’s Anita Powell reports.

Tim Walz spent a year teaching in China in 1989 and later organized student trips, and says he visited the country more than 30 times over the years. Republicans say Walz’s long ties to China mean Beijing will welcome him joining the Harris ticket and predict he will loosen hard-line U.S. economic and trade policies.

She selected Tim Walz, a guy who wants to ship more manufacturing jobs to China.

Vance appeared to be referring to Walz’s several-years-old support for trade with China as Minnesota’s governor. Walz made no mention of China at his debut campaign appearance, but here is the then-congressman in 2016 about how he viewed the country’s relations with the United States:

In China, in the hours after his debut on the campaign trail, Harris’ vice-presidential pick quickly became a trending topic. This user said, “I think he might be friendly to China.” Other Chinese internet users thought he would take a harder line. While in Congress, Walz co-sponsored a number of resolutions critical of China’s human rights record. One nationalist military historian said the Democrats want to “destroy China.” Others commented on what Walz called his “life-changing lunch,” with the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled leader. Keen China watchers say that, so far, Beijing has not publicly reacted. But here’s what they see in Walz:

He’s been very forthright in his criticisms of China’s human rights record, and I think he’s done that from a position that is maybe more credible because of his conspicuous earnestness and his sincerity.

TAA International Hi-End Audio Show spotlights latest in audio electronics

The 34th International Hi-End Audio Exhibition kicked off Thursday with the latest audio products on display. The exhibition has a total of 180 show rooms, with some 500 well-known brands from Taiwan and abroad. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look.

This theater audio system first launched at this May’s Munich High End Audio Show, dazzling global audio enthusiasts. Now it’s made its Asia debut at 34th TAA International Hi-End Audio Exhibition in Taiwan.

This is the latest from the United States. It uses a multichannel format to present music, which is different from the traditional way. It has more than 10 speakers. You can see the surrounding speakers here, and they play at the same time, making the sound more vivid. There is a sense of space, making it feel as if you were listening to a live performance.

This high-end audio system, known as the “Sound of Berlin,” has also been popular among audio enthusiasts.

They insist on manufacturing in Berlin, Germany, and 95% of the products are made using German parts. Because they have done very well in the audio field, many famous car brands have asked them to help them make their audio sound systems.

The second largest audio exhibition in the world and the largest in Asia has kicked off at Taipei’s Grand Hotel. There are more than 180 showrooms and some 500 well-known brands from Taiwan and abroad exhibiting their products. On display are high-end audio and theater systems worth tens of millions and the newest audio products on the market.

‘Case Closed’ characters decorate ferry connecting Kaohsiung to Cijin

Known as Detective Conan in Taiwan, the manga and anime series “Case Closed” has found fans all over the world. Many of these fans might be heading to Kaohsiung, where they can take a Conan-themed ferry to and from Cijin Island. Also benefitting from the experience is Kaohsiung City Shipping, which hopes that this boating experience will increase ridership and shore up losses.

The side of the boat is decorated with the beloved Japanese anime character Conan. Other characters from the series are also lining up. During the opening ceremony, one rider with Conan-themed hand fans had a smile on his face as he took a picture with the ferry.

This is the first time Kaohsiung City Shipping Company has partnered up with the famous anime series “Case Closed.” Nicknamed the ocean bus, the themed ferry’s maiden voyage was on Aug. 16, and its last trip won’t be until sometime in late April 2025. The round-trip ferry service from Kaohsiung Port Warehouse No. 2 to Cijin is available four days per week, and visitors can redeem gifts by getting stamps at different Cijin tourism locations. With summer vacation coming to an end, the company is hoping to increase ridership.

If we take into consideration what it’s been like in years past, then this year we can probably increase ridership numbers to between 180,000 and 200,000.

In 2022, a Snoopy-themed ferry that took riders to Cijin was able to in just one year get over 200,000 riders, which was a 20% to 30% increase in ridership figures. Yet nothing has been able to fix years-long financial losses, and, as a result, during peak hours the number of boats in operation have been reduced from four to three, and wait times have been increased to being anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes, resulting in many unhappy Cijin locals.

We’re also working with the city government. On top of meeting the transportation needs of Cijin locals, the company is also committed to finding ways to operate efficiently so that we’re turning a profit.

Facing the dilemma of needing to increase revenue while also improving ridership numbers, it seems like currently there’s no quick fix solution other than getting a bit of help from famous cartoon and anime characters.

Sanyuan temple in Taoyuan gets a fresh lick of paint

A temple in Taoyuan’s Longtan District has gotten a fresh lick of paint! After more than five decades, the colors on the murals at Sanyuan Temple were starting to look a little faded. So the Hakka temple has called in master temple painter Liao Feng-chin, who is using new painting methods he developed over his half a century in the job. When the project is complete, the murals will be bolder and brighter than ever before.

This Sanyuan Temple consultant comes to life as he shows us the new murals in the temple. Hsieh Chin-chi and his colleagues hope the bold new colors will give this 50-year-old temple a breath of fresh air.

The god’s helmet and weapons and beard will all be 3D. This painting method is very rare in the modern day.

Sanyuan Temple has seen 50 years of ups and downs here in Sanhe Community, Longtan District. Recently it hired temple painter Liao Feng-chin to repaint its murals, bringing in more purples and peachy pinks, to make these beatific images more appealing to visitors.

This is the latest method, an innovative method. It’s not the same as traditional painting techniques. You need to do it a bit 3D. I’ve been studying painting for 50-odd years and I’m still exploring new things every day, revising how I work, and always coming up with new methods.

All the different colors make it more light and lively. I think it’s a fashionable temple, fashionable colors. In the future, apart from visitors coming here to pray to the Three Great Emperor-Officials and all the many gods, we can also bring in more cultural tour guides.

The new method involves drawing a sketch with chalk, then painting on top. In the past, the lacquer for one door would take just three days, but now it takes a whole week. The project is expected to take four months to complete. It’s just a quarter of the way through so far. When the time comes, the temple guardians look forward to welcoming in lots of new guests, to pray, to enjoy the art, or to appreciate the innovations of Hakka culture.
