History and snacks come together at theater production in Ximen’s Red House

The Red House in Taipei’s Ximending was Taiwan’s first public market when it was built back in 1908. Since then, it has also served as a hub for art, trade, and culture. Now, the Red House is holding a theatrical production that allows visitors to learn more about the building’s 117-year history while enjoying Taiwanese delicacies from different eras. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

The play starts with the first day that the Red House opened its doors. The show features over 15 singing performances, which recount news events related to the Red House. This is an immersive show put on by the Allupeople Theatre.

A building can represent the culture of a place. If we use the Red House to talk about Taiwan’s culture, it will become an iconic piece of performing art. Through this work, we can introduce Taiwan’s performing arts, Taiwan’s culture, and Taiwanese snacks. This is our original intention for putting on this show.

Aside from enjoying the show, visitors can even taste 12 representative traditional foods from different eras in Taiwan. The performers themselves serve the dishes while interacting with the audience.

Buildings, food and culture, all get passed down over generations. I went out to investigate what was popular in the Ximending area from the Japanese colonial era to the present day. We came up with a list of 20 dishes, but I later cut that down to choose the best ones. You can eat while you watch the play.

The show will take place from October till December at the Red House.

這部劇作的故事從紅樓開張後開始，結合與紅樓有關的新聞事件，計有超過 15 場演出。這是全民大劇團在西門紅樓劇場推出的定目劇《西門町一番地》沉浸式演出。

"一個建築可以代表一個地區的文化，如果我們用紅樓來講台灣的文化，我覺得它會成為一個非常指標性的表演藝術。我們希望可以透過這個作品，介紹台灣的表演藝術、台灣的文化、介紹台灣的小吃，這是我們的起心動念。"

除了欣賞表演之外，觀眾還可以品嚐12種台灣不同時代的代表性傳統美食。表演者一邊上菜，一邊與觀眾互動。

"文化不管是建築物，然後美食，人文都是一直流傳下來的。我找到從日治時代到現在，西門町地區流行什麼，包括吃什麼，本來討論菜單有將近20樣，後來刪減，精選到最好的，你可以邊吃邊看劇。"

《西門町一番地》將於10月到12月在西門紅樓劇場演出。

Lai calls for regional unity at 8th Ketagalan Forum

Scholars and politicians from 11 countries convened Wednesday at the Ketagalan Forum, an annual dialogue on Asia-Pacific security. In his opening remarks, President Lai Ching-te urged democratic countries to come together to counter China’s authoritarianism. He also reiterated that Taiwan was willing to engage with China on the basis of parity and dignity.

The eighth Ketagalan Forum was held on Wednesday, with a focus on peace and security in the Indo-Pacific. It was the first dialogue on regional security hosted by the Lai administration. Speakers included 15 prominent political figures and experts from 11 countries, including the chief executive advisor for the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and former Prime Minister Noda Yoshihiko. China’s growing authoritarianism will not stop with Taiwan, nor is Taiwan the only target of China’s economic pressures. That is why democratic countries must come together and take concrete action. Only by working together can we inhibit the expansion of authoritarianism.

Lai once again underscored his “four-pillar plan” to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, telling China that Taiwan is willing to conduct cross-strait exchanges.

In his first visit to Taiwan in nine years, Noda showed his support for the country, voicing opposition to any unilateral changes to the status quo via force. In the face of Beijing’s military intimidation of countries in the region, experts say unity is key to countering the expansion of China’s authoritarianism.

Thousands take part in robot and automation show

The four-day Taiwan Automation Intelligence and Robot Show officially opened on Wednesday, attended by Premier Cho Jung-tai and economics minister J.W. Kuo. This year, a total of 1,200 companies from Taiwan and abroad are exhibiting in 4,500 booths. Both figures are record highs.

Premier Cho Jung-tai and economic minister J.W. Kuo are here at the opening of the Taiwan Automation Intelligence and Robot Show. Exhibitors have come hoping to outshine each other’s advancements.

This laptop-scanning robotic arm was developed by ASUS and Jochu Technology. The companies teamed up to create an optical system that can automatically and accurately identify defects. The technology helps to save on labor and catch things that might be overlooked by humans.

It runs algorithms developed by ASUS, but edge computation is also compatible with Intel and Nvidia.

There are nine themed areas, including smart manufacturing and service robotics. Companies are focusing in on industrial robots, mechanical arms, mobile robots, and other products showcasing the increasing ubiquity of AI applications in Taiwan.

AI-powered robotic arms are used at the end of the manufacturing process to perform final quality checks. Whereas before it would take a person 10 minutes, the robot only needs one or two. Production records can also be provided to the buyer and seller.

Water bottles and tumblers top Taipei Metro lost items list

What do you think is the most commonly lost item on the Taipei Metro? Two years ago, the correct answer would’ve been umbrellas. But now, water bottles and tumblers have taken over the top spot, with almost 90 bottles lost in just two weeks this month. Moving down the list, clothing, umbrellas and documents such as electronic tickets are also common items left behind by their owners.

A train pulls into the platform. Some passengers alight at the station. But for some of their personal belongings, the journey isn’t over yet.

Back in 2022, the Taipei Metro announced that the three most-commonly lost items on the MRT were umbrellas, bags and wallets. But things have changed. Now umbrellas are No. 3 on the list, after water bottles and clothing. As of July this year, a total of 80,000 water bottles and items of clothing had been found.

This is the Lost and Found center at Taipei Metro. As you can see, there are tubs and tubs full of lost water bottles. Now that it’s summer, more and more misplaced bottles are being found at Taipei Children’s Amusement Park.

With so much fun to be had, kids often forget their belongings everywhere. Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, which is managed by the Taipei Metro, reports that up to 300,000 items are lost every year. Only about 40% make it back to their owners.

I’ll only claim things like wallets or more expensive items. You just go to the Lost and Found center and tell them what the item looks like, and they’ll try to find it for you.

Besides going to the lost-and-found counter in person, passengers can also use the Taipei Metro mobile app. The AI-powered chatbot can help users find their belongings and create a lost item report.

Thanks to the AI chatbot, you can look for your lost item with just a few taps. For umbrellas, we leave them at the station they were found for 16 days. After that, we put them out as courtesy umbrellas for everyone to use.

According to Taipei Metro regulations, items valued at NT$500 or less are stored for 16 days. If nobody claims them, the person who found them will be notified and offered the item. Items worth more than NT$500 are kept for six months before the finder is notified. If the finder doesn’t collect them after three months, the objects are donated or destroyed.

Olympians praise amenities at Taiwan’s relay stations

The Olympics may be over, but it’s not time to close the curtain on Paris just yet. The Paralympics are to begin soon, featuring 13 Taiwanese athletes competing in seven events. During the Paris Games, Taiwan set up three large relay stations for athletes and their coaches, who had great things to say about the amenities. Now after a short stay at home, the staff have to fly back to Paris to care for the nation’s Paralympians.

During the Paris Olympics, Taiwan’s cafeteria provided all kinds of homestyle dishes beloved by the nation’s athletes.

Boxer Huang Hsiao-wen invited some of her fellow athletes to join her for a familiar meal of popcorn chicken and beef noodle soup.

At this year’s Paris Games, Team Taiwan set up three large “relay stations.” They included a cafeteria with Taiwanese food that could even deliver to the Olympic Village or stadiums, as well as a physical therapy clinic for recovery and a sports center to make training more convenient.

The stations received resoundingly positive feedback from the athletes and coaches. But after only a few days back home, staff from the National Sports Training Center have to go right back to Paris to prepare for the Paralympics.

We want to give our athletes and their coaches the best training environment before they compete. Then during the competition, we want to give them as many resources as possible.

Taiwan is sending 13 athletes to compete in seven events at the Paralympics. The three relay stations will also continue offering their services, although with a few adjustments.

We asked the chefs to prepare food that’s a bit milder to better suit some of the athletes’ needs. Out of respect for their privacy, we’ll set up a physical therapy center and counseling services at their hotels.

Even though they’ve been working nonstop, the Sports Training Center says the athletes have been training their entire lives for a chance to stand on the world’s greatest sporting stage. The country must help in any way it can to smooth their path to glory.

Experts advise how and when to eat raw oysters

Taiwan’s oyster industry is worth NT$3.74 billion annually, making it the seventh-largest in the world. They’re often made into Taiwanese specialties like oyster omelets and vermicelli, although foodies also love the briny taste of raw oysters. But the larger oysters that are served raw take more than three years to raise. They also should only be eaten in winter. So how do you choose the right ones? Let’s find out.

A huge raw oyster is placed on a bed of glowing coals, its plump meat turned to heat evenly on both sides. Served with lime and ginger, everything you’d want is in one large mouthful. But for a stronger ocean flavor, you should eat it raw.

The chef uses a toothbrush to wash each fold of the oyster. The shell must also be cleaned thoroughly. With just a little bit of lime, it’s ready to eat. Satisfaction is written on the diners’ faces. But when eating raw oysters, you have to know how to pick the right ones.

The adductor muscle is a little transparent and springy. The color is pretty obvious underneath the lobes. If it’s springy when you touch here, it’s also a good way to judge its quality. Then check the gonad. It shouldn’t be too clear. Because Taiwan stays pretty hot, raw oysters need to be tested for bacteria.

Since the warm waters around Taiwan are favorable to bacteria growth, you can only eat raw oysters for part of the year. But compared with the Pacific oysters from the U.S. and Japan that are larger and have a brinier flavor, Taiwan’s Portuguese oysters are chewy and sweet, and are often used in oyster omelets and vermicelli.

Taiwanese oysters tend to be smaller and chewier. The meat is also a bit sweeter. The ones in the U.S. are on the slipperier side and are larger. In Japan, oysters like the Hiroshima ones people are familiar with are sweeter. You can taste the ocean flavor.

Taiwanese oysters are mostly raised in Chiayi’s Dongshi and Penghu. With an annual value of NT$3.74 billion, Taiwan is the seventh-largest producer in the world.
