NTNU sports science team aided gymnast’s comeback

2024-09-03

Olympic bronze medalist Tang Chia-hung on Tuesday attended a presser promoting an elective athletic training program for students at National Taiwan Normal University. Tang, who is pursuing a PhD in sports science at the university, thanked researchers for helping him optimize his gymnastics routine. Their efforts allowed him to jump back into the competition less than half a year after suffering an injury.

Taiwanese gymnast Tang Chia-hung had to take a break from the horizontal bar after rupturing his Achilles’ tendon in February last year. Thanks to the sports science research team at National Taiwan Normal University, he made it to the Paris Olympics.

At the moment I honestly, really felt so defeated. I thought it spelt the end to my career. I had to rebuild my confidence. My coach said to me, as long as I can pull off another 500-degree Yamawaki, I will be back at it.

Using intertial sensors, the sports science research team at National Taiwan Normal University dissected and monitored Tang’s moves and landings. The routine optimization allowed Tang to return to the ring within half a year, much to the amazement of his fellow gymnasts around the world. Tang is now working on adding another full spin to his signature move, the Yamawaki.

I’m also thinking about how I can innovate on my best moves. And of course I’ve been discussing with my coach to figure out how I can make another full spin. We’ve started working on it.

Weng Shi-hang
Gymnastics coach
We had the same idea. Chia-hung aims high, we all do. But sometimes he goes a bit too far. When he said he wanted to do 900 degrees, we all thought he was joking. At that point why not just spin all the way up to the moon?

Tang and National Taiwan Normal University President Wu Cheng-chih embraced each other to celebrate Tang’s successful comeback.
