Campers flock to mountains to take refuge from summer

Though a beach getaway might be the typical image of summer, in Taiwan, camping in the mountains has emerged as a popular alternative. While down in the plains temperatures can often break into the high 30s, up in the mountains, the weather is cool and breezy. Some campers say Majia in Pingtung is the perfect refuge from the suffocating heat.
A group of friends has gathered for a summertime camping trip. They gather round to cook a meal outdoors, where it’s not as sweltering as you’d think.
They loaded up their vans and drove up just over an hour into the mountains, where it feels a world apart from down in the plains. This is a plum orchard in Majia, Pingtung, a popular retreat for campers escaping the summer heat.

I come here quite often, more than 10 times during summer. It’s very hot down in the plains, I can’t bear it. So we come up the mountains. It’s about 23°C or 24°C now.

Getting here from the plains takes an hour at most. The average temperature here is about 20°C. It’s cool and nice.
Climate change is bringing about increasingly hot summers, and staying indoors with a fan or the AC on just doesn’t cut it anymore. A modified car meant for sightseeing and traveling has become the savior of summer. Instead of parking it at the beach, you can plop it down in the mountains for a cooler break.
Have your pick: 35°C degrees in the plains or 20°C in the mountains? If you are looking to cut down on sweating, the hills may just be the place to go.

常露營的人都知道，夏天就是要往山上跑。儘管南台灣天氣炙熱難耐，但對露營愛好者來說完全不是問題，因為就算平地高溫飆破35，山上溫度卻能保持20多度，只要一個多小時車程就能感受不同的涼爽世界。跟著露營車社群的版主阿零，一起到屏東瑪家鄉山區，來探訪他心中理想的避暑聖地。
明明是炎熱的夏天，三五好友居然在戶外相聚圍爐，絲毫感受不到炙熱的天氣。
載滿裝備開上車子上山露營，距離平地一個多小時的車程，卻是彷彿兩個世界完全不同的感受，這裡是屏東瑪家鄉桃花園，是不少露營愛好者心中理想的避暑聖地。

“蠻常來的，整個夏天應該來超過十次，現在平地超熱的啊 受不了，所以往山上跑。現在這個溫度，大概才23度、24度”

“你看我從平地來到這邊，才差不多頂多一個多小時，這裡平均溫度多落在20上下，很涼，很舒服”
地球暖化極端酷熱的天氣，吹冷氣吹電扇，不僅效果有限，也完全不節能減碳。原來只是滿足遊山玩水夢想的改裝車，沒想到竟然變成夏天避暑的利器，海景第一排紛紛變成山景第一排。
就算平地高溫飆破35，山上溫度卻能保持20多度，涼爽的體感溫度，簡直是夏季的世外桃源。
