No-shows at the SOE joint exam outnumber past years

No-shows at the SOE joint exam outnumber past years

2024-10-13

Exams for job applicants at the four major state-owned enterprises were held over the weekend across Taiwan. But the number of no-shows rose to a three-year high, despite relatively good starting salaries at those companies. Nevertheless, Taipower’s spokesman said he felt confident the SOEs would remain an attractive prospect for job seekers, given the salaries, bonuses and other benefits.

Job candidates sit in a test room, focused intently on their exam papers. They are testing for new positions that have opened up at the four major state-owned enterprises: CPC, Taipower, Taisugar and the Taiwan Water Corporation. While the candidates sit the exam, parents sit outside waiting anxiously to hear good news.

A total of 21,662 people registered to take the joint exam, with 11,238 showing up on test day to vie for the 826 vacancies – a three-year record low. Due to all the no-shows, this year’s acceptance rate had risen to 7.35%.

The starting salary is not bad, and there are significant salary increases. At my current job I’m paid just NT$30,000.

Job candidate
I remember last year employees at state-owned enterprises got annual bonuses worth 4.4 months’ salary. That’s a pretty good benefit and much more stable than other jobs out there.

The most competitive positions in anti-corruption and human resources saw thousands applying for single-digit openings. Jobs in library information also collectively saw 411 people competing for just four openings. The admission rate for those positions was less than 1%.

Tsai Chih-meng
Taipower spokesperson
We hope the colleagues who will join us will be of good quality and that their salary and benefits can be closer to those of the private sector. Therefore, in recent years we have been improving the salary of new employees. In fact, we have been working very hard on this. Although there are differences between the different state-owned enterprises, the average monthly salary across the board is about NT$44,000 to NT$45,000. Compared with the average salaries of fresh graduates in the market, this should be a fairly attractive salary.

Despite a general labor shortage, the state-owned enterprises appear poised to attract talented applicants. With good annual bonuses and stable salary increases, SOEs remain a draw for many job seekers.
