China condemns Japanese marriage registration update

Starting May, Taiwanese people married to Japanese nationals will be able to indicate their place of origin as "Taiwan" when registering their marriage in Japan. The change has not gone down well with Beijing, which says Japan is attempting to, quote, "play tricks" with the Taiwan issue. Japan says it will not respond to Beijing’s condemnation, as marriage registration is an internal affair.
Currently, Taiwanese who marry Japanese nationals are forced to write “China” as their nationality on registration forms. But starting May, that will change, as the Japanese Ministry of Justice has announced the forms will accept countries and regions. That means, filling in the form with “Taiwan” will be allowed. Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung has thanked Japan for the change. But across the strait, China is fuming.

China urges Japan to abide by the One China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan and not play tricks with the Taiwan issue that could send contradictory and wrong signals.

This is an internal decision for Japan. Therefore, there is no need to respond.
Japan’s Ministry of Justice says the amendment allows the individual filling the form to accurately indicate their origin. That prevents potential problems that could arise when registering marriages or filing for divorce abroad, as regulations in other countries and regions are different. People who have already registered their marriage or who have naturalized as Taiwanese citizens may request to update their documents once the new rules enter effect.

日本法務省宣布，五月開始放寬婚姻登記的"國籍"一欄，可以填寫國家、也可以寫上"地區"。代表今後台灣和日本人結婚，可以用"台灣"做登記。中國政府得知消息，卻大為跳腳。日本政府則表示，這是日本自己內政上的決定，認為沒必要對此做出回應。
過去和日本人結婚的台灣人，婚姻資訊的國籍一欄，都只能填寫"中國"。如今日本法務省宣布，將從5月開始，除了國家之外，也准許寫上"地區"名稱，也就是台灣人終於能夠以"台灣"作登記。外交部長林佳龍，立刻對日本各界友人，表達感謝。不過北京政府接到消息、卻是大為跳腳。

法務省表示，相關修正，可以清楚標示當事人的國籍或地區，以免進行結婚或離婚手續時，因為不同國家或地區的法律規定、產生混亂。如果先前已經登記結婚，或是已歸化的台灣出身者，未來只要提出申請，也可以變更戶籍上的記載。
