Renowned harpist and cellist to perform around Taiwan

Today we take you to meet renowned Dutch harpist Joost Willemze and famed Taiwanese cellist Lin Sheng-Chiun. The two are combining their considerable talents to perform a series of concerts in Taiwan. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to the duo to find out more.

Harpist Joost Willemze and Taiwanese cellist Lin Sheng-chiun take to the stage, performing songs inspired by Amsterdam’s canals and Tainan’s historic Anping District.

Lin is an award-winning Taiwanese cellist who has lived in the Netherlands for 12 years. Meanwhile, Willemze is an award-winning Dutch harpist. They have both performed extensively in the Netherlands and abroad. The duo are currently on a Taiwan tour. Their concerts will offer audiences three unique listening experiences.

We prepared two sets of the repertoires. One set is for the main concert halls in Taipei and also in Taichung. The big main concerts. We will bring three types of music. One is classical Swan, the Black Swan, and also the tango of the 1960s. Also, we have some classical pieces specially made for cello and harp.

Every year, in August, we have a very big concert on the canals actually. Then, everyone sings this in the end. We have an arrangement for that for harp and cello.

First, they will reimagine classic favorites like "The Swan". Additionally, the program includes works specifically composed for the harp and cello, highlighting the distinctive qualities and characteristics of both instruments. Finally, the concert will premiere new compositions by Huang Ling-hsuan, a professor at National Taiwan Normal University, which is known locally as “Shida.”

It includes education so we are going to Shida for a workshop and for master classes. They are going to provide both chamber music master classes and also contemporary music master classes. And also, I will be there for a music administration master class.

It is important to always choose programs that you believe in and that you really like. Also, sometimes when you go to a certain place to have repertoire that also speaks to the heart of the audience on location. For example, here in Taiwan, we have some music by a Huang Ling-hsuan who is actually a composer in Taiwan.

Six or seven Taiwanese folk music and also one music from “Cape No. 7.” Also, we bring some other beautiful pieces from the harp and cello.

The duo will hold a series of concerts and workshops around Taiwan until March 9.

荷蘭豎琴與大提琴二重奏帶給聽眾全新體驗

今天帶大家認識兩位優秀音樂家，來自荷蘭的豎琴家尤斯特・威勒姆澤，和台灣大提琴家林聖宭，兩人攜手，在台灣舉辦音樂會與工作坊。

豎琴家尤斯特・威勒姆澤，和台灣大提琴家林聖宭共同演出，以阿姆斯特丹運河和台南歷史悠久的安平區為靈感的曲子。

旅居荷蘭12年的台灣大提琴家林聖宭，以及荷蘭豎琴家威勒姆澤，都曾獲多個音樂獎項，他們在荷蘭和世界各地經常演出，目前正在台灣進行巡演。

"我們準備了兩套曲目，在台北和台中大型音樂會演出。我們將帶來三種類型的音樂。包括是古典的，像是法國作曲家聖桑的《天鵝》、巴西作曲家維拉-羅伯斯的《黑天鵝之歌》，還有阿根廷作曲家皮亞佐拉的《1960年夜總會》。此外，我們還有一些專為大提琴和豎琴所寫的古典作品。"

"包括六、七首台灣民謠，還有一首《海角七號》的音樂。我們還帶來了其他豎琴和大提琴好聽的作品。"

KMT lawmakers hold 7-minute protest as premier delivers speech

The legislature got rowdy on Tuesday, as Premier Cho Jung-tai delivered a speech. Cho had taken the podium to address lawmakers, when KMT lawmakers stormed the floor shouting slogans and holding up placards. The protest lasted a whole seven minutes and only ended after repeated calls for calm from Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu. In the end, Cho was able to deliver his speech, in which he called for cooperation between ruling and opposition parties.

KMT lawmakers flooded the floor holding up placards during Premier Cho Jung-tai’s address to the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday. The ruckus was such that even Speaker Han Kuo-yu of the KMT called for order.

Eventually, the lawmakers returned to their seats, except for Wang Hung-wei, who stayed on the floor and engaged in a tussle with several DPP lawmakers.

After the commotion, Cho once again took to the podium to speak, stressing the importance of cooperation and unity between the legislative and executive branches and between ruling and opposition lawmakers.

As the executive and legislative branches adjust to each other, there will inevitably be ups and downs. I hope that during this session, both government branches will put the people’s needs as a top priority and work together to promote long-term development and put forward legislation that benefits our nation.

Cho reiterated the importance of cooperation. After all, disputes over the national budget continue. Reports say the Executive Yuan will request the Legislative Yuan to reconsider the finalized budget on Thursday.

For example, the cuts to the budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs exceed the original budget. That of course creates difficulties for all administrative units. We are still considering how to handle the matter through legal and constitutional procedures.

MOCA exhibition explores the five senses

Today, we take you to a museum exhibition exploring daily life and the five senses. It’s titled “No Language” and will be on at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei until May 4. The exhibition features works from 14 Taiwanese artists, including an art piece made of chewing gum. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

This work was created by Chen Sung-chih using chewing gum. By replacing the act of chewing with sculpting and stepping, he hopes to explore the material’s mutation over time and encourage viewers to reexamine the aesthetic of everyday objects.

It’s made of chewing gum. When you walk into the exhibition, you can see its texture and smell it. He wanted to take the physical feeling of sculpting and turn it into a feeling of stepping on something. We usually chew gum. He switched from chewing gum to stepping on the gum to complete this work.

This work, “On the Ground,” was inspired by artist Ho Yen-yen’s memories of the Sunflower Movement.

You can see three boards, including one made of asphalt, and one out of outdoor sports field. Another is a wooden floor for an indoor sports field. The artist came up with the idea for this work when he participated in the Sunflower Movement in 2014. While he sat on the ground for a long time, he did not touch the asphalt floor, so he took the texture of the ground people stepped on and transformed it into a wall surface, allowing visitors to touch or smell it.

Artist Liao Chung utilized old, abandoned home appliances and gave them new life by connecting them with a remote game controller. Press a button, and the appliances will move. The work hopes to bring to light consumer culture and environmental issues.

You can see that there are many home appliances at the exhibition site. You can get the remote control from the refrigerator. This time he made the home appliances into cars, so people can use the remote controls to operate the home appliances. He hopes to creatively utilize the discarded home appliances and give them a new life. The work also criticizes consumer culture or environmental issues.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei is holding an exhibition titled “No Language.” The exhibition explores everyday objects, memories of daily life, and five senses from each artist’s perspective.

No Language is an exhibition that does not require the use of words to explain. Sometimes the things you feel may not be expressed in words, so for these works you need to understand it through touch, or smell.

Tainan trials direct left turns, city-wide rollout by end of year

If you have a scooter license, then you probably know that many left turns have to be performed in two stages. But last year, Tainan loosened the rule in 10 districts. Scooter drivers in those areas can currently choose to make direct left turns, as long as they make sure to do it from the innermost lane. The city aims to roll out the laxer rule to the entire city by the end of the year.

When making a left turn on a scooter, it’s permitted to either do a two-stage turn or turn left directly from the innermost lane. But that only applies in 10 districts in Tainan since around a year ago.

It’s smoother to just go straight to where you want. It also won’t be as dangerous with all the vehicles coming from the left and the right. We also don’t have to wait for another green light anymore.

Elsewhere, drivers must still make a hook turn. Though direct left turns are being trialed in some areas in Tainan and may eventually expand to the entire city, drivers must make sure to only turn left from the innermost lane, should they want to make a direct turn.

You must signal early before changing lanes. Don’t turn left directly from the outer lane. That’s very dangerous no matter what you’re driving.

Stick to the left if you’re turning left and the right if you’re turning right, and not have all the scooters on the outermost lane. It’s caused great inconvenience to scooter drivers.

Currently, Tainan is loosening the rule that scooters can only make two-stage left turns. But there are still 27 one-way roads with two lanes that forbid scooters on the inner lane. The city government is mulling expanding the new policy to these roads.

We hope to complete assessments regarding this by the end of the year. That’s one of our goals.

Tainan’s Bureau of Transportation also found that permitting direct left turns did not lead to a noticeable increase in accidents. It’s also a change welcomed by drivers. The city expects to complete the policy’s rollout by the end of the year, but the marked waiting areas will still be there for old habits.

Artists subvert Keelung’s dreary reputation with colorful street paintings

Keelung to many people evokes the image of endless rain, damp weather, and darkness. But movie set painter Chiang Chin-feng and designer Hu Yung-wei are looking to change that. These two artists of different generations have joined forces to give a fresh feel to Keelung’s streets, hoping to leave the reputation behind forever. Let’s take a look at one of these unique alleys...

The sea view at Keelung Harbor is beloved. Too bad it’s raining half of the year’s 365 days. The “Rainy City” has become Keelung’s second name. But come with us now as we walk its streets, and we might see another side to this city.

These metal security shutters and electric boxes have colorful new digs. The paintings of old movies and traditional eateries evoke childhood memories for many. If you keep going, you’ll see two lively children reproduced in vivid detail. They’re all the handiwork of two artists.

I became an apprentice at 17 and have been painting straight through until now, over 50 years later. The trick is to have a set composition. That’s where the charm comes from. Then the piece will work.

At over 70 years old, Chiang Chin-feng has painted countless movie billboards. His smile betrays his boundless enthusiasm for his work. There’s also Hu Yung-wei, who used to work as a graphic designer. Together, these two generations of artists make colorful paintings that draw admirers and give new life to these drab streets.

Since the movie industry has declined, I found a new path. People enjoy it! They think our paintings are all right.

Using his experience painting movie posters, Chiang is making over the old buildings of Qidu. This unique partnership between a veteran movie painter and a young graphic designer grants a fresh take on nostalgia, their collision sparking a whole new style.
