Flight turns back to Taiwan due to Heathrow airport blackout

2025-03-21

A power outage at London’s Heathrow Airport has disrupted the travel plans of more than 100,000 passengers around the world. The blackout was caused by a substation fire, and resulted in a full-day emergency shutdown. At least 1,350 flights have been affected.

Among them are the China Airlines flight CI081 from Taipei to London. The plane, which had been carrying 150 passengers, was forced to return to Taiwan after takeoff. EVA Air has had to cancel services between London and Bangkok. Operations are expected to continue for some time, as Heathrow says power has yet to be fully restored.
