Humpback whales have been spotted for two days in a row off the coast of Taitung, delighting locals. Up to four whales were seen traveling in two smaller pods in a single day, making for the highest number of daily sightings in recent years. The Taitung County government is currently leading an initiative to promote marine conservation and education. Videos of the whales can be submitted to the government for a cash prize. Let’s hear more.

We hold training courses every year to give the public a better understanding of the habits of humpback whales, and be able to observe them more easily. We give out prizes. The awardees can get a small gift, an illustrated guide to marine animals. Or they can get a coupon of NT$500 to NT$1,500.
The footage shows two whales traveling together. One of them raises its fin as if waving to its human friends. The other one -- not to be outdone -- swims to the surface to show off its majestic tail. Though it’s a beautiful sight to behold, conservationists remind the public to keep a distance from the animals so as to not disturb them.
