Residents in Changhua capture rhinoceros beetles to deep fry

Thousands of rhinoceros beetles make their home in Changhua’s rural Fengyuan Township. They are especially active lately, as it’s their breeding season. But people have been spotted capturing the beetles in large numbers. When someone stepped in to stop them, they said they were planning to take the beetles home to deep-fry them and have with beer.
Rhinoceros beetles climb up and down the trees, searching for a mate in their breeding season. This is an ecological park in Changhua’s Fengyuan Township, home to thousands of these beetles. Many nearby residents stop to observe them when taking a walk.

It’s really great, it’s very natural. Animals should be allowed to live freely.
But other residents were spotted shaking the tree or hitting it to capture large numbers of the beetles.

I ask them why they were catching these rhinoceros beetles. At first, they said it was for fun, then they said it was to sell them. I saw another two or three people catching them, and they said they were going to deep-fry them to have with beer.
Some people couldn’t understand why someone would want to eat fried beetles as a snack.

Rhinoceros beetles are all protein. You might as well eat tempura. It goes better with beer.
An expert also warned that eating these beetles has some food safety concerns.

Because they are in the wild, especially natural insects in the wild, they are likely to have parasites, bacteria, or viruses.
As rhinoceros beetles are not a protected species, there is currently no penalty for capturing them. But local authorities urged the public to enjoy observing nature and not interfere.

彰化芬園民眾捕捉獨角仙 稱要"酥炸"配啤酒

目前正是獨角仙繁衍季節，彰化縣芬園鄉，一處自然生態區，棲息著多達上千隻的獨角仙。不過卻有民眾目睹，有人大量捕捉獨角仙，上前勸阻後，對方竟說是要抓回家酥炸配啤酒。
光蠟樹上，獨角仙爬上爬下，現在正逢繁衍季節，彰化芬園有一處自然生態園區棲息多達數千隻獨角仙，壯觀景象，吸引許多路過民眾，駐足觀賞。

“真的很好，很大自然，動物就讓牠自由生存。”
不過民眾發現，有人以搖樹或用木棍敲樹等方式，大量捕捉獨角仙，趕緊上前制止。

“我有問他們說你們抓這個(獨角仙)要幹嘛?一開始說要玩，後來又說要抓去賣，我又看到有另外兩三個去抓，他們就說要去酥炸，酥炸配啤酒。”
聽到有人抓獨角仙回家要酥炸當點心，一些民眾無法理解。

“怎麼會有人想炸，這能吃嗎?”

“獨角仙都蛋白質，你倒不如去吃甜不辣，配個啤酒還比較好吃。”
專家也指出，吃獨角仙會有食安疑慮。

“因為牠們在野外，尤其是野外的一些自然昆蟲，牠們身上或多或少都會有一些寄生蟲，或是細菌、病毒之類的。”
由於獨角仙不是保育類動物，目前無法可罰，相關單位也呼籲民眾，用眼睛觀賞即可，千萬不要破壞珍貴的大自然。
