While waiting at a red light one day on Taichung’s Xitun Road, a scooter driver and passenger were struck by a bottle gourd falling from the sky. The entire scene was recorded by the vehicle behind them. Our reporter visited the site of the incident and found that the gourd in question likely came from the roof of a nearby building. Police said that if it was thrown deliberately, the culprit could be criminally liable for injury and damages.
A scooter is stopped at a light on Xitun Road near Fengjia Market in Taichung. If you look closely, you can see something falling.
A bottle gourd drops from the sky, seemingly hitting the riders before rolling along the road. A man walks over and picks it up. But isn’t it a little ridiculous for a gourd to randomly fall from the sky?

Incidents like this just happen.

It’s dangerous. Really dangerous.
Traffic along Xitun Road Section 2 is always busy. So where did the gourd come from? It seemed to have fallen from the rooftop garden of a nearby building. We even caught it on camera. You can see many other gourds hanging from the trees, and even the apparent owner.
Garden owner
If they were hit, we’d have to compensate, but I didn’t see anyone. It hasn’t been harvested yet. How could I know?
The gourd fell from a rooftop and nearly struck some motorcyclists. Good thing they were wearing helmets, or it could have been bad.
Lee Chien-wei
Xitun police station chief
We haven’t received any reports about this kind of incident. If someone throws an object that harms a person or property, they might face criminal liability for injury or damages.
There’s nothing wrong with planting a rooftop garden. But gardeners need to be careful to check if anything might fall and prune regularly to avoid causing a disaster.
