US big-box store launches home deliveries, amid stiff competition

US big-box supermarket Costco on Thursday launched food deliveries via the platform UberEats, and the big news is that you don’t have to be a Costco member to have items delivered to you. Some experts believe Costco is trying to take a bite at the market shares of two major local retailers, PX Mart and Carrefour, originally a French brand but now under Taiwanese management.

Members of US-style warehouse clubs used to have to pay more than NT$1,300 in membership fees a year and push trolleys under the scorching sun. Now if you casually want to buy food stuffs, it’s not nearly so troublesome.

In the past, when people would come to US-style stores, many of them would bring the entire family along to help transport the purchases out. But now a delivery platform is working with this US-style store and has even parked a fleet of motor scooters in the parking lot.

It’s a specialized fleet that’s fully equipped. There are now 4 million Costco members, while the food delivery platform has around 3 million users, which is almost as many. Even if you are not a member, you can still buy things at a non-discounted price. Will Costco members feel it is unfair?

That’s if they want to enjoy the convenience. Of course, if it’s a little more expensive, some people are still willing to pay. I like to buy things that I can see, that works better for me.

In order to grab a greater share of the local market, Costco started cooperating with Uber Eats on Thursday in addition to its own delivery services, to compete with two major local hypermarkets, Carrefour and PX Mart.

Costco must also want to seize this piece of the market, and integrate with current consumption patterns and trends in Taiwanese society.

They can reach out to more new customer groups. When comparing them with each other, consumers may have some degree of brand loyalty or specific product preferences. In these cases, even if prices are higher, consumers will still choose it.

The price of ordering Costco goods via Uber Eats is still higher than buying from its brick-and-mortar stores. It will take time to see if people are willing to pay for this.

量販店"外送PK大戰" 美式大賣場週四起加入戰局

國內量販掀起外送大戰,今天(26)開始,美式賣場好市多上架外送平台Uber Eats,不是會員也能買到賣場東西,有專家分析這個舉動,是要搶攻本土兩大零售品牌,全聯和家樂福市場。

美式賣場會員,頂著大太陽、推著推車,每年還得繳超過1300元會費,現在想輕鬆採買食材,不用這麼麻煩。

“以往來到美式賣場,不少人都是全家出動來搬貨,但是現在外送平台和美式賣場合作,還把專屬車隊停在停車場”

專屬車隊,配備齊全,以好市多會員數400萬人來算,外送平台用戶約300萬人,只是不是會員,也能以沒折扣的價錢買到東西,會員們會覺得不公平嗎?

為了搶攻本土市場,好市多除了自家外送,周四開始和Uber Eats合作,要和本土兩大量販店,家樂福和全聯競爭。

“好市多也必須要搶進這一塊的市場,來去跟現在台灣社會,消費模式消費動態,來去做一個結合”’

“是能夠接觸到更多的新客群,在彼此之間比較上,消費者可能會有一些品牌忠誠度,或者是特定的產品偏好的話,那這時候即便價格比較貴,消費者還是會去選擇”

叫Uber Eats買好市多外送商品,價格相較於實體賣場來得更貴,民眾買不買單,需要時間證明。
