Taichung breaks ground on east-west MRT Blue Line

2025-06-27

The Taichung MRT’s east-west Blue Line broke ground on June 26. Mayor Lu Shiow-yen appeared ecstatic, declaring that Taichung had waited 20 years to see the project take off. It will be the largest public transportation project ever in Taichung, stretching 24.7km from Taichung Port to New Jianguo Market. The entire line is scheduled to start running in 2034.

The cheerleaders are dancing enthusiastically, as the MRT Blue Line, which symbolizes the lifeline of Taichung’s east-west transportation, has finally broken ground.

The Blue Line of the Taichung MRT will begin at Taichung Port and stretch eastward to New Jianguo Market, traversing eight districts and 53 boroughs. The 20 stations, with eight above ground and 12 underground, will be constructed with various innovative and high-caliber techniques.

Lu Shiow-yen
Taichung mayor
Our citizens have waited for 20 years, but I’ve remained firm in telling our citizens that we must see the construction begin, even if this once didn’t seem possible. We delivered on that promise. Finally, we broke ground today.

The planned Blue Line and the existing Green Line intersect at Taichung City Hall station. Passengers will not need to exit the station to transfer. The “grand cross” MRT network will connect all neighborhoods from the coast to the mountains and through the city center. Meanwhile, Taichung also called on the central government to push forward with a total of seven planned lines for Taichung’s MRT.

Lu Shiow-yen
Taichung mayor
We’re now working on accelerating the launch of all seven lines. We hope that the Legislative Yuan and the central government can assist us in getting the budgets for the seven MRT lines approved so we can break ground as soon as possible.

The Blue Line, at 24.7km in total, is a NT$16.15 billion project. The foundation-building mechatronics engineering work began on June 26, while civil engineering works will be tendered in three projects. The bidding process and subsequent construction for these projects will kick off one-by-one beginning next year, in hopes that the entire line will be completed and start running in 2034.
