Vice President Hsiao tailed by Chinese embassy during 2024 visit to Czechia

Vice President Hsiao tailed by Chinese embassy during 2024 visit to Czechia

2025-06-27

Last year in March, then vice president-elect Hsiao Bi-khim made a three-day visit to Prague, Czechia. During her time there, she was tailed by spies dispatched by the Chinese embassy. The Czech Military Intelligence Service on June 26 confirmed that the Chinese embassy had tried to sabotage Hsiao’s visit and even planned to physically confront her. The plan was discovered by the Czech side when a Chinese intelligence officer involved presented a diplomatic passport, after getting pulled over by the police for running a red light and almost causing a traffic accident. In the end, the Czech foreign ministry did not retaliate against the Chinese embassy in Prague, for which the Czech Senate President expressed regret. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s officials have also reacted. Let’s hear more.

Karen Kuo
Presidential Office spokesperson
We’d like to again express gratitude to Czechia for its strong support and professional protection provided during the vice president’s visit. On the other hand, we strongly condemn China’s actions which violate international norms, and which cause trouble and pose risks to the international community.

Chen Yu-chen
Lawmaker (KMT)
Those people named as diehard Taiwan independence separatists or whatnot, it seems like they must be very careful overseas, or in general. Our vice president was almost hit and put in grave danger while overseas. For that, our national security, national defense and diplomatic units must treat this more seriously.

Puma Shen
Lawmaker (DPP)
Such action coming from China is not only harassment, but more importantly, they are continuously trying to extend their legal powers. They’ve also established overseas police service stations as an attempt to broaden the reach of their legal jurisdiction. On a different note, our former president actually had the gall to say in China around the same time the news broke out that he wants peaceful and democratic unification. That’s not only an assault on our national dignity: I believe it’s fundamentally against the law.

The spokesperson for the Czech Military Intelligence Service said that the operation “was a case of physically following, to the point of endangering the Taiwanese vice-president; an attempt at gathering information about her schedule, and documenting her meetings with prominent figures of the Czech political scene.” Although the Czech foreign minister had summoned the Chinese ambassador to provide an explanation, which was later deemed “insufficient,” ultimately Czechia did not retaliate, for example by expelling the Chinese officers involved.
