Tafalong Community heartbroken after fire ravages red rice cultural site

2025-07-04

A fire has ravaged an important tourism and cultural center for the Amis people in Hualien. The blaze broke out past 11 on Thursday night. It completely destroyed an exhibition and activity site focusing on red glutinous rice, also known as katepaay. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but all the seeds in the building have been completely destroyed. Let’s hear more.

Hsiao Ming-shan
Tafalong Community
There were our wines, the exhibits. The rice seeds have been burnt, and they’ll be difficult to replace for some time. Our annual katepaay festival was going to be held on July 19. But now we have nothing, so we’ve had to cancel it.

Cheng Yun-sheng
Hualien County Fire Department
The fire destroyed the entire building and damaged two cars. Its cause is still under investigation.

The building was established in 2014 and was modeled after traditional Amis dwellings. For the Tafalong Community, it was a key site to showcase the local Indigenous lifestyle to visitors through katepaay, a culturally significant crop. It also housed a shop that sold products from local farmers. The fire has left locals heartbroken and it will take some time until it can be rebuilt to continue serving as a hub for the Indigenous community.
