2025 Cup of Excellence Taiwan crowns presidential winners

Dubbed the “Oscars of the coffee world,” the Cup of Excellence is an annual international competition and auction for specialty coffee. This year, it drew international judges from 14 countries to Taiwan, where they selected coffees that best represent Taiwan’s unique local flavors. FTV reporter Stephany Yang caught up with the winners of the Presidential Award to learn what set their coffees apart.

Deputy Secretary-General to the President, Ho Chih-wei, presented the "Presidential Award" to four outstanding coffee producers. Two of the producers own estates located in Alishan and Chiayi.

I think it’s probably due to the excellent cultivation environment. Meticulous cultivation management is essential. In addition, we have good post-harvest processing methods—it’s a highly precise process.

Hailed as the “Oscars of the coffee world,” the Cup of Excellence recognizes the finest specialty coffees from around the globe. This year’s event brought together elite judges from 14 countries to crown the winners.

We have 27 winners coming from the different regions from Taiwan. We have four coffees that made above 90 points. The coffees were fantastic this year. They have beautiful floral aromas, fragrance, a lot of citric notes, and a lot of berries.

The Cup of Excellence auction volume surpassed 1,000kg for the first time last year, with coffee beans selling at an average price of NT$5,900 per kilogram. Over the past four years, the total retail value from auctions has nearly reached NT$100 million, showcasing Taiwan coffee’s strong competitiveness in the international market.

A coffee that scores above 90 must have some truly distinctive flavors. Just imagine—compared to many other coffee-producing countries, Taiwan’s production costs are relatively high. That means coffee from Taiwan entering international auctions can be considered among the most expensive, most precious, and highest-quality coffees in the world, and it’s presented to the global coffee market in this way.

With over 4.2 billion cups of coffee consumed annually, Taiwan’s and high-quality production coffee industry is booming.

被譽為咖啡界的奧斯卡的「COE卓越盃咖啡國際競標」，是全球最具指標性的精品咖啡生豆賽事與競標活動。今年吸引來自14國的國際評審齊聚台灣，評選出最具代表性的在地風味。

總統府副秘書長何志偉，親自頒發「總統獎」，給四位咖啡傑出生產者，其中兩位還是來自阿里山和嘉義的莊園。

卓越盃咖啡國際競標去年拍賣重量首次突破1000公斤，平均每公斤咖啡豆拍出新台幣5，900元的高價。光是四年來累計拍賣零售產值已逼近新台幣一億元，展現台灣咖啡在國際市場的強勁競爭力。

TSMC makes record NT$398.27B in net profit for Q2

Investors were anticipating TSMC’s Q2 earnings call on Thursday afternoon, not less because of the NTD’s recent sharp rise and the looming risk of US tariffs. The timing of the event also lent an almost cinematic suspense, for it began at 2 p.m., just as air defense drills ended in Taipei. All tension broke when TSMC reported the highest ever net profit for Q2 in the company’s history, at NT$398.27 billion. The gross margin stood at 58.6%, also exceeding expectations.

As soon as the air defense drill alert is lifted, TSMC’s Q2 earnings call begins. The silence just moments ago soon turns into exuberance. Over this period, TSMC made more than US$30 million in consolidated sales, an 11.3% increase compared to Q1. The net profit would’ve looked even better were it not for the NTD’s recent sharp rise, but still, at a 58% gross margin, exceeding projections, TSMC reported the highest-ever Q2 net profit to date for the company, at NT$398.27 billion.

Wei says the company has revised up projected consolidated sales for the whole year of 2025, and that they expect to generate consolidated sales between US$31.8 billion to US$33 billion in Q3. He adds that TSMC is also building the second and third US fabs ahead of schedule to meet demand from US clients.

Tariffs are government policy. It’s up to governments to decide, and we respect their decision. Due to systematic uncertainties, we did have some more conservative considerations.

Although the US is yet to reveal how much tariffs it’s going to impose on Taiwan, which is a risk for TSMC, the company still believes earnings per share next year could exceed NT$20, higher than NT$18 this year. With a stellar Q2 performance, TSMC’s American Depositary Receipts rallied and increased more than 6% in value. It seems that most investors have a lot of confidence in the company, too.

Average total earnings for full-timers in May surpassed NT$65,000

Do you feel like you are earning what you are worth? The latest data published by Taiwan’s statistics bureau says the average total salary for full-timers in May was NT$65,542. Regular salaries minus bonuses and other allowances stood at NT$50,483. However, the median regular salary stood at NT$38,224, showing that some jobs in Taiwan pay a lot more than others.

Terry has worked as a marketing planner for four years. He has received a raise every year and has stocks in a trust that help him save money. But even for him, it is not easy to reach Taiwan’s average monthly earnings figure of NT$65,542 for May.

In the later period, I’ve got some bonuses: year-end bonuses and some for good performances, and if I add them up, I can get closer to this, maybe an average monthly salary of NT$60,000. I personally think that NT$60,000 is actually a very high salary for ordinary office workers.

In May, the average regular wage for full-time workers was NT$50,483. To reach an average total salary of NT$65,542, you need to add on bonuses and overtime. However, Taiwan’s median salary is only NT$38,224, also showing that you need to choose the right industry and position to make money, as there are big discrepancies in wages.

The industries with higher salaries include electronics manufacturing industries for consumer electronics, and the semiconductor industry. The financial services industry or software and internet, are industries with an average monthly salary of over NT$50,000. If a salary is less than NT$40,000, it is usually in a relatively low-paid profession such as social services, the beauty industry, private security and so on.

Relatively high salaries are also due to hours put in overtime. In the electronic components manufacturing industry, average monthly overtime hours stood at 27.8 and for the manufacturing industry it was 17.9. In May, the average total working hours of full-timers averaged 167.7 and the average overtime put in was 9.1 hours.

Peter Cook exhibition on show at MOCA

Famed British architect and Archigram co-founder Peter Cook is currently exhibiting his works in Taipei. The exhibit explores the duality of Taiwan’s city and natural landscapes through a series of installations and digital prints. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

When you first enter the exhibition space, you will see the work "Street of Secrets." This work is Cook’s vision for a future city that coexists with nature. He imagines a city that grows like a forest. The hand-sketched structures along the street aren’t traditional buildings. Instead, they have flora sprouting and resemble different geological formations.

For this exhibition at MoCA Taipei, he composed a section that closely reflects the urban street scenes he observed in western Taiwan. From the viewer’s point of view, it evokes the feeling of being on a street. As one moves forward, it feels like entering the work.

At the far end of the exhibition hall is “Inclusive Landscape,” where Cook showcases Taiwan’s eastern mountains and coastlines. The work is a hybrid terrain where buildings are portrayed like geological formations. He depicts a welcoming and accessible area.

“Inclusive Landscape” includes elements of natural scenery such as mountains, rivers, and small architectural forms. For this exhibition, two large-scale installations have been created as extensions of Peter Cook’s original drawings—one titled "Street of Secrets" and the other "Inclusive Landscape." Within the space, visitors will see large panels applied across surfaces—these installations are direct reproductions that have been fragmented and reassembled from the original artworks. The goal is to invite viewers to quite literally step into the drawings and immerse themselves in Cook’s architectural universe.

The exhibition presents installations and 13 digital prints inspired by Cook’s travels in Taiwan, where he explores the island’s different identities—the bustling, high-density cities of the west and the tranquil, mountainous landscapes of the east. His work invites new ways of imagining how urban and natural environments can co-exist. Throughout his career, Cook has been creating works that envision the future of architecture.

Peter Cook has visited Taiwan multiple times, and through these visits, he observed a striking contrast between the landscapes of eastern and western Taiwan. The west is largely shaped by cities and streets, while the east features mountains and coastlines—two dramatically different landscapes. His drawings are deeply intertwined with his architectural ideas. He uses color and collage-like layering techniques. Throughout his career, Cook has pursued a highly experimental approach to architecture. Whether through drawings or installations, he aims to spark the viewer’s imagination about the future of cities and architecture. One of his past ideas is “Plug-In City,” which envisions architecture as modular components—interchangeable units that can be transported, selected, and assembled into a city.

The exhibit will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei until Aug. 10.
