And now with all the doom and gloom in the news, here’s an uplifting story. Typhoon Danas hit Tainan’s Qigu hard and for a while there was no water or electricity, making life tough for local villagers. Luckily for them, a Pingtung charity made a special visit. Volunteers made hundreds of hot meals in front of a temple every day, including seafood noodles replete with shrimps and oysters, for the typhoon survivors to enjoy.

All these fresh oysters are put into a big pot with vegetables, eggs and other ingredients. A charity from Pingtung went to Qigu’s disaster-stricken areas and cooked seafood noodles in a square in front of a temple.

I was very moved. The volunteers were busy cooking for us. I was so moved that I almost cried.

As there was no water or electricity, local residents were unable to cook. Volunteers from the charity brought their own pots and gas stoves to prepare more than 400 servings of seafood noodles every day for free.

Each person received bags of prepared foods, to have a full meal while cleaning their homes. The volunteers who came to help were able to sit down to eat them and rest.

Because of the disaster, I came back to my hometown to help with the energy I have. Some people donate money, I contribute my energy.

Though there is still some way to go before the villagers can rebuild their homes, the survivors are deeply moved by the kind hearted people who are helping them along the way.

台南七股被颱風重創後，一度沒水沒電，災民生活不便，有慈善團體就特地從屏東，到七股災區，每天在廟宇前準備上百份的熱食，有充滿蝦仁和蚵仔的海鮮麵，讓災民享用。

新鮮蚵仔全下鍋，裡頭有蔬菜、雞蛋等配料，滿滿一大鍋，來自屏東的慈善團體，前進台南七股災區，在廟前廣場煮起海鮮麵，給災民享用。

由於當地災後沒水沒電，居民沒辦法開火煮食，慈善義工自備鍋子和大型瓦斯爐，每天準備400多人份的海鮮麵，讓辛苦的災民免費領取享用。

每人一袋餐點，災民在忙碌清理家園的同時，能夠飽餐一頓，也讓熱心來幫忙修補房屋的義工，能坐下來吃飯休息。

儘管家園重建還有一段路要走，但路上有善心人士幫忙，也讓災民心中滿滿感動。

Two men busted egging DPP HQ after anti-recall TPP rally

Two supporters of the TPP were caught vandalizing the DPP headquarters with eggs on Sunday evening. The two men, aged 40 and 65, had met up after an anti-recall rally to egg the DPP office. One threw eggs at the signboard, while the other recorded the scene to post it online. The TPP has distanced itself from the incident, saying it does not condone such behavior.

The two men drove into the building’s underground car park, where there was no security. They took the lift up to the 10th floor, went to the entrance to the DPP headquarters and started egging the wooden signboard.

Police reviewed CCTV footage after the incident was reported, to identify the two perpetrators.

The incident happened at 6 on Sunday evening. An anti-recall rally held by the TPP outside the building had just ended. Things were still bustling at street level while trouble brewed upstairs.

One of them has been identified as 40-year-old Mr. Lee, who referred to himself as a former volunteer for the TPP. The other is 65-year-old Mr. Hung, who knew Mr. Lee from being supporters of the TPP. They planned in advance that Mr. Hung would record Mr. Lee throwing eggs at the office and post the video online.

The DPP says it will press charges and will not be lenient. The TPP says it does not condone such “extreme behavior.”

This disorderly behavior sets a terrible example. Last night, the TPP made a horrible scene for all the country to see. If you didn’t know the context, you’d think the perpetrators were part of pro-unification groups or had come from a gathering of violent factions. It’s inexplicable that this behavior arose from an event held by the TPP, which touts itself as rational, centrist and non-factional.

Proactive middle schooler takes initiative to clear irrigation channels on his own

A problem-solving middle schooler in Tainan is being showered in praise for his sense of initiative. The boy saw that debris from the recent typhoon and storms had clogged up the irrigation channels in his hometown. Seeing the problem, he headed home to grab a shovel and cleared the twigs and leaves, all of his own accord. The gesture has not gone unnoticed in his community and online.

He couldn’t bear seeing the waterway blocked with leaves and twigs, so he took matters in his own hands, going home to get a shovel and clear the blockage. His proactive problem-solving has garnered him praise online, with more than 80,000 likes on social media.

The branches and leaves were blocking the water, it could’ve caused flooding. Everyone else was busy, but I had time, and I couldn’t bear to see it like that, so I went home to get a shovel and cleared the channel.

The student took the initiative to clean his neighborhood, a gesture that has not gone unnoticed. Some joked that he would certainly win an election for borough warden. Others have praised his upbringing, which has made him grow into a neighborly kid. He sees it differently though. For him, he was just doing what he was supposed to.

He comes from a farming family, and they are used to irrigating the crops, so whenever there’s something blocking the waterway, they clear it out. Since it was a kid who did it of his own accord, it might encourage more people to do the same.

Innovator uses tech to solve the headache of finding a parking spot

Everyone knows what a drag it can be finding a parking spot in Taiwanese cities: parking lots are often jam-packed. One parking lot business has solved the problem by partnering up with a tech company to provide smart parking with advance online bookings. It’s added on other services, including charging stations and discounts on food, clothing and other consumer items, hoping to corner the parking market.

Korean girl group, cheerleader popularize Taiwanese school uniform

Which high-school uniform do you think looks the best? The one from Chia-chi Senior High in Tainan was recently worn by a UniLions cheerleader from South Korea, as well as by the South Korean girl group aespa. The outfit has actually been voted as Taiwan’s best-looking uniform many times before. But when asking people on the street in Taipei, many students hold a special place for the Taipei First Girls’ High School uniform.

This UniLions cheerleader from South Korea made her solo debut on the CPBL stage wearing an aqua-blue sailor uniform with a pleated skirt and tube socks. Eagle-eyed fans could easily identify it as the uniform for students at Tainan’s Chia-chi Senior High.

Winter from the South Korean girl group aespa also wore the uniform during an event, even showing an ID number and name to the surprise of her Taiwanese fans. The Chia-chi uniform has been voted as the best-looking in Taiwan for many years already.

Aside from Tainan’s Chia-chi, when discussing Taiwan’s best-looking uniform, many people also like this yellow one from Jingmei Girls’ High School. For years, it’s been ranked the best in Taipei.

According to an online ranking, the most-discussed high-school uniform in Taiwan is the one from Chia-chi. Also on the list are Juang Jing Vocational High School, Chih Ping Senior High, Jingmei Girls’ High, and Shu-te Home Economics and Commercial High School. But if you ask students in person, this school is the one brought up the most.

Natural swimming pool reopens in Taitung after water level restored

The natural swimming pool in Taitung’s Yong Quan Sports Park has been closed for the past few years due to low water. To fix the problem, the city office restored water levels by digging new wells. This Taitung mainstay has now reopened to the public, to the delight of residents young and old who can enjoy the pool for free. Taitung Mayor Chen Ming-feng said the water is all recycled, so there’s no risk of over-extracting groundwater to keep the pool functional.

Going swimming is a popular way to beat the summer heat. These kids, ready for the water with floaties in all shapes and sizes, can’t wait to jump in and swim with the fishes.

The adults are also having a great time leisurely floating along.

This is Yong Quan Park in Taitung City, which the locals call “Pulu.” It’s been around for nearly 90 years, helping locals make it through the stifling summers ever since the Japanese colonial era. But recently, improper construction in the surrounding area has over-extracted the groundwater, leaving the pool without a stable water supply. Hoping to restore this beloved local mainstay, the Taitung City Office initiated a total renovation.

We dug the wells very deep and are extracting water from different depths, so we don’t have to worry about not having enough water. But the main thing is that we’re recycling the water.

The city office said that with the addition of three more wells, the water level will remain at a safe level for people to swim in.

There are lots of fish and small shrimp in the pool. People can bring their kids here to swim with the fish and shrimp. What a great childhood memory for them to have!

Apart from finding a water supply, the renovation also took into account environmental and safety considerations. Now restored to the public, this pool where people can swim in harmony with the fish can once again feature in the summer memories of Taitung residents.

Hospital holds memorial service for breast surgeon killed by a bus

Last Saturday, Dr. Chou Chia-cheng who headed Taoyuan General Hospital’s breast surgery department was killed by a bus while crossing a street in Taipei. On Monday, the hospital held a memorial service for him. Other medical staff members and patients all remembered him for his service over the years.

It has a pure white body and wings. If Dr. Chou could ride it then he could get anywhere in heaven with ease. He wouldn’t have to walk and risk himself like he did.

The late Dr. Chou Chia-cheng’s patient Ms. Pan offered a unicorn plushie in tribute. She can’t help but sob when talking about how Dr. Chou had treated her. She’s not the only one remembering him.

I can’t accept this. He really helped us face many psychological problems, not just our physical ailments. He helped us get a healthy body today. We’re really grateful and really sad that we’ve lost him.

Dr. Chou Chia-cheng was hit by a bus while crossing a street in Taipei. He was severely injured and couldn’t be resuscitated. After the incident was made known at Taoyuan General Hospital, where he served, his colleagues and patients all mourned his loss. On Monday, the hospital held a memorial service for him. At the venue, a video presentation showed pictures of him working alongside the medical team over the years.

At the time of his death, Dr. Chou was the head of the breast surgery department at Taoyuan General Hospital, under the Ministry of Health and Welfare. He was an authority in treating breast cancer, and has won multiple awards from the health ministry for cancer treatment. He started as a general surgeon and at one point of his career later on, he was responsible for all of the hospital’s patients with breast diseases. That made him so busy he could not return home for days. His colleagues compared him to an alkaline battery because it seemed as if he could always keep going.

Taiwan beats China in table tennis at 2025 Summer World University Games

Great news for Taiwan from the ongoing 2025 Summer World University Games in Germany. On Sunday, for men’s table tennis gold medal team match, Taiwan emerged as the winner against China’s team, which is the top-ranking national team for table tennis at the Summer Universiade. Although the team managed to defeat a respectable opponent, Taiwan’s second-highest ranking Kao Cheng-jui speared self-critical for having lost the two matches he played.

Taiwan was up against China for men’s table tennis gold medal team match at the 2025 Summer World University Games. Taiwan’s Feng Yi-hsin won against China’s newcomer Chen Junsong in the first match in a tight race.

Kao Cheng-jui, Taiwan’s second highest-ranking male table tennis player is up. But against China’s Sun Zheng, whom he’s previously lost to, Kao did not manage to win this second match, bringing the score to one-all.

Luckily in the third match, Taiwan’s Huang Yan-cheng brought the team to advantage again, winning against China’s Zeng Beixun. In the fourth match, however, Kao lost again, this time to Chen. In the fifth and final match, Feng Yi-hsin brought victory to Taiwan after winning against Sun Zheng, who played the second match against Kao.

Before the game, I guess everyone expected us to do well. We all wanted the gold. But... it’s true that I did really poorly today, but… I’m still thankful that my team members cheered me on and helped me achieve getting this gold medal.

Although Kao lost both matches he played on in the men’s team gold medal team match, thanks to the other two players on the team, they still added gold medals to Taiwan’s team.

Winning three matches against China’s two, the team managed to bring an end to China’s gold medal streak for men’s table tennis team match over six editions of the summer Universiade. It’s also the first time for a team other than China to win gold for table tennis, other than Japan in 2017. It’s no wonder Taiwan’s winning team is so ecstatic.
