Mountaineering team helps Tainan residents cover typhoon-damaged roofs

Many roofs were damaged when Typhoon Danas struck Tainan earlier this month. Even more than two weeks later, many still haven’t been repaired. Using their expertise from rock climbing and mountaineering, the Clouded Leopard Work Team from Kaohsiung’s Outdoor Exploring Association helped to repair 10 roofs in just one day, showing their skill even in stormy weather.

Climbers stand on a roof over a story in the air, using ropes to pull up a tarp while others keep it flat underneath. It looks like a simple job for these dozens of volunteers.

This is the Clouded Leopard Work Team from Kaohsiung’s Outdoor Exploring Association. After thousands of roofs in Tainan were damaged from Typhoon Danas, the team set out to make use of their mountaineering expertise to help.

We have many different teams. You start with a lead rope or someone with climbing skill, because the tarp doesn’t look too heavy, but once you’re on the roof, if you don’t judge things right, it can be dangerous.

Some houses don’t have a way to set up stairs, so they have to climb up on their own. After getting their footing on the roof, they patiently unravel the rope to help spread out the tarp more efficiently.

We sent one team here. At one time people can do four. We did 10. It’s been highly appreciated.

Many roofs are still waiting to be repaired after the typhoon. Volunteer firefighters and groups from all over are joining in the rebuilding effort, using their expertise to help people get their homes back as soon as possible.

上一次丹娜絲肆虐台南地區，許多住戶的屋頂被吹掀，已經超過兩周，還沒完全修復，來自高雄的中華戶外探險協會雲豹工作隊，靠著山訓累積扎實的攀爬、繩結專長，1天最多能修好10戶，在風雨中展現高效能救援量能。

工作隊成員，站上好幾層樓高的屋頂，有人負責用繩索，把帆布往上拉，有人在底下，鋪平帆布，看似簡單的工作，出動了好幾十名成員。

“帆布上面其實有勾環，它其實是很容易拉破的，如果妳會基本的繩結的話，其實在這個任務上，都蠻容易可以協助到”

他們是來自高雄的中華戶外探險協會雲豹工作隊，丹娜絲颱風重創台南，上萬戶屋頂被吹掀，成員利用山訓累積的技巧，主動投入災後復原工作。

“這邊會分很多組，要先理繩啊，或者是一些攀登的技巧，因為帆布它看起來不是那麼重，但是只要一到了屋頂上面，實際上人如果沒有算好是會有風險的”

有些住戶環境，無法架設樓梯，只能靠成員徒手攀爬，站穩屋頂後，手裡還要拿著繩索，不慌不忙的解開，協助帆布更快速的搭建。

風災過後，台南許多民宅屋頂都待修補，各界義消和志工團湧入，發揮各自修繕專長，希望幫助民眾盡早恢復家園。

Chinese sports staffers intimidate Taiwan medal winners at Universiade

A man and a woman appearing to be Chinese sports administrative personnel confronted and intimidated Taiwan’s medal-winning athletes at the 2025 Summer World University Games. The two taekwondo silver medalists were about to receive congratulatory messages from the Ministry of Education on the sidelines, when the aggressors went up and tried to obstruct the presentation. Taiwan’s Sports Administration delegates and two FTV reporters present at the incident came together to shield the athletes. Meanwhile in Taiwan, officials have strongly condemned China’s aggression against Taiwanese athletes.

The two taekwondo players that just won silver medals are about to be presented congratulatory messages from the Minister of Education on the sidelines of the games. All of a sudden, a man and a woman that appear to be Chinese sports administrative personnel approach them and attempt to obstruct the presentation. Two FTV reporters tell them off while they, with Taiwan’s Sports Administration staff, shield the athletes from the aggressors.

The two Chinese personnel still try to push through, leading to a physical altercation.

Even though the presentation took place away from the limelight, the Chinese staffers claimed that Taiwan had violated the games’ official rules. Our reporters, undeterred, keep pushing back.

In the end, the Chinese staffers finally leave. Afterwards, it’s discovered that the woman was a staff member on China’s official sports body for students under the Chinese education ministry. Although the man’s full identity is yet to be confirmed, he was wearing the International University Sports Federation’s shirt and the badge he has on indicates he may be affiliated with the organizer.

I strongly condemn such uncivilized, criminal action from the Chinese team, Germany is a free and democratic country. Presenting congratulatory messages to our own athletes and calling “Go, Taiwan!” to cheer on our athletes are both in no way under the scope of the Olympic Protocol. I urge the Chinese team not to overreach in the name of the Olympic Protocol, and hurt the feelings of the Taiwanese people.

Athletes from other countries who witnessed the incident also offered support to the Taiwanese athletes who were harassed by the Chinese officials. It’s alleged that China ramped up intimidation against Taiwan at the games after losing the table tennis men’s gold medal team match, which is a sport China usually excels at. However, results of any sports game are just that. As for Taiwanese athletes, or indeed all athletes, they’ll continue to do their best as they always have.

Chiayi residents mourn typhoon ‘tree graveyard’ along roadside

Chiayi City, known for its abundance of trees, was hit hard by Typhoon Danas. The city government collected all the fallen flora and piled it alongside Xinsheng Road, creating another kind of spectacle.Residents shocked by its scale have likened it to a “tree graveyard.” Some have even brought cameras to record the scene. The city said the wood will be burned for fuel to ensure they get maximum use.

Massive piles of toppled trees are stacked about a story high beside Xinsheng Road here in Chiayi. All this destruction was caused by Typhoon Danas.

They are at the very least a few decades old. For decades-old trees to be torn down by one typhoon is horrible. It’s really like a graveyard. A tree graveyard. So I especially came here today to make a record of it.

Residents were shocked by the scale of the “tree graveyard,” even bringing cameras to record it.

There’re so many. Not only here. Also in front and over there. It’s so huge. This is really shocking. For an entire park to be ruthlessly wiped out by one typhoon.

Chiayi is known as Taiwan’s tree capital, since it serves as the entryway to Alishan and was famous for its lumber industry. But thousands were blown down in just this one typhoon. With the scale this large, even two weeks after the storm, they still haven’t been cleared. More are being added to the pile all the time.

Some of the trunks are very large, and have clearly been growing for decades. The city said they’ll be utilized until the very end.

After all this destruction, the fallen trees seem to be murmuring a warning to remember this lesson and never ignore the power of nature.

DPP Lawmaker Fan Yun invited to give expert testimony to US congressional hearing

For the first time ever, a lawmaker from Taiwan gave witness at a US congressional hearing. On July 23, DPP Lawmaker Fan Yun gave a statement remotely to the US Congressional-Executive Committee on China, in a hearing that aims to advance US legislation against China’s political warfare that aims to undermine US-Taiwan relations. In Fan’s 12-minute speech, she gave various examples of China’s malign influences and campaigns that seek to repress Taiwan. Let’s hear more.

Last year, Taiwan’s baseball team won the WBSC Premier12 championship. But like in any other international sports games, any mention of “Taiwan” is taboo. This example was given in DPP Lawmaker Fan Yun’s testimony for a hearing at the US Congressional-Executive Committee on China. Fan is also the first legislator from Taiwan to serve as a witness at a US congressional hearing.

This is the reality we live with: constantly silenced by the PRC. [These] transnational attacks against members of the military and the government, including the planned car collision targeting then-VP-elect Hsiao in Czechia.

As an example of how China attempts to intimidate Taiwan officials, Fan mentioned how Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim was tailed by spies affiliated with the Chinese embassy during her visit to Prague shortly after her election. She also touched upon China’s information warfare in Taiwan, which involves attempts to influence local media outlets with disinformation campaigns and subsidies to internet celebrities to create China-friendly content. She also linked a delegation of around a dozen KMT lawmakers that met with an official of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office to opposition-led controversial legislations, and explained how that sparked the mass recall movement to unseat district KMT lawmakers. With that, Fan urged the US to step up in supporting Taiwan against China’s malign influences.
