Extreme rainstorm in Chiayi causes ‘unprecendented’ floods

The ongoing extreme rainfall in Southern Taiwan continues to wreak havoc in the south. Many regions in Chiayi are flooded. The headwaters of Puzi River in Zhuqi Township swelled so high that the water level nearly surged past the embankment. A local resident said his home had never seen such severe flooding.
The river continues to surge, despite lowering levels of precipitation in Chiayi’s Zhuqi Township. A muddy deluge from the headwaters of Puzi River keeps crashing downstream in a frightening scene.

It kept raining and raining heavily, so much so that the sewers can’t drain the water. There’s blockage. We had to get excavators to help deal with it. The rain was really heavy this time around.
Also in Zhuqi, right by Provincial Highway 3, the entire road surface is flooded, and so are nearby homes. A local resident had their security shutters in the basement stop working, much to his dismay.

I got up a little after 5 this morning and saw that there was a flood. I didn’t know when it became flooded. My wife and I stood there for an hour or two, completely aghast at the sight.
Mr. Weng says he was shocked at how bad the flood was. He also says it’s the first time to have his home flooded, having lived here for more than 60 years. He could only get an excavator to clear the flooding when the rain stopped for a bit.

It wasn’t so bad during Typhoon Morakot in 2009. We’ve been living here for so long, and we’ve never seen anything like this.
Tropical Storm Co-may’s periphery and southwesterly winds brought extreme rain to Chiayi and left many neighborhoods flooded. For now, locals can only wait out the current rain spell to clean up their homes.

嘉義多處淹水!竹崎牛稠溪溪水暴漲 快超過防坡堤

受到颱風外圍環流以及西南氣流影響，嘉義多處地區淹水，有在當地住了60多年的居民說，這是第一次家中淹水，自己跟太太都嚇到，甚至過去八八風災時，都沒有那麼嚴重，他們也趁著白天雨勢變小時，趕緊找怪手來清淤。而同樣在嘉義竹崎的牛稠溪，也因為連日大雨，造成溪水暴漲，水勢一度快超過防坡堤。
滾滾溪水不斷暴漲，嘉義竹崎雖然雨勢變小，但牛稠溪的溪水，夾帶著泥沙，不斷從上游傾瀉而下，水勢大到甚至就快超過防坡堤，場面相當驚悚。

“下大雨一直下一直下，下到就是水溝、排水溝宣洩不了，有堵塞，我們自己請怪手先把它(淹水)處理掉，這次雨下太大了。”
同樣在竹崎，台三線旁，整條路面都是積水，居民的家也無法倖免，都受到淹水影響，甚至有住戶的地下室鐵門整個壞掉，無法使用，讓他們苦不堪言。

“我早上5點多起來，看到這樣(淹水)，不知道什麼時候淹的。我跟太太都站在那邊，站了1到2個小時，看起來都傻掉了。”
翁先生看傻眼，根本沒有想到會淹水會這麼嚴重，他也說自己在這住了60多年，第一次看到水淹到家裡，趁著雨勢間歇，他趕緊找怪手來清理。

“(2009年)八八水災都沒有(淹成這樣)，我們住這麼久了，沒有看過這種情形。”
颱風外圍環流加上西南氣流影響，嘉義受到重創，多處地區淹水，居民也只盼雨別再下了，讓他們可以趕快清理家園。
