Taichung holds forum to promote understanding of immigrants

In order to raise awareness about the diverse cultures of Taiwan, Taichung held a forum focusing on Taiwan’s immigrants. There were two themes: “media and culture,” and “workplace and careers.” Both first and second generation immigrants were invited to share their experiences. They included Vietnamese actress Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, who was nominated for a Golden Bell Award for her role in "Brides Married Here." The actress shared her experience of breaking into the entertainment industry as an unknown. Let’s hear more.

From dance performances to food and handicraft stalls, the unique cultures of immigrants are on display. Taichung organized a forum inviting everyone to share their experiences living in Taiwan. Vietnamese actress Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, who got a break in the entertainment industry as an amateur, was also invited to attend.

I came to Taiwan when I married a Taiwanese man. I never thought I could be an entertainer, but I’ve been one in Taiwan for 10 years. I also hope to have opportunities to create more works and shoot more works about immigrants. No matter where we are, we can accept our cultures. By communicating with each other in our families, we can learn from each other.

The forum invited people from all walks of life to share their experiences.

為促進對新住民多元文化的理解與尊重，台中市府法制局與民政局共同舉「新住民二代論壇」。以「媒體與文化」、「求職與職場」兩大主題，邀請新住民及新住民二代分享經驗。曾以「新娘嫁到」入圍金鐘獎的越南籍女星阮氏翠恆，也到場分享素人演員的經歷。

從舞蹈表演，到各國新住民飲食文化及手工藝品攤位，展現新住民的多元文化。台中市政府辦理「新住民二代論壇」，邀請新住民分享在台灣的生活經驗，曾以素人之姿勇闖演藝圈的越南藝人阮氏翠恆，也受邀到場。

Boris Johnson gives keynote speech at Ketagelan Forum

The Ketagelan Forum on Indo-Pacific security was held on Tuesday in Taipei, and attended by domestic and international leaders, including President Lai Ching-te and former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. It was Johnson’s first time to visit Taiwan, but he seemed to already know how to build a good rapport with the audience. In his keynote speech, Johnson expressed confidence in Taiwan, faced with Beijing’s threat to invade by 2027. He also said it would be a huge mistake for China to take Taiwan by force.

Ketagalan Forum: 2025 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue was attended by President Lai Ching-te and international guests-of-honor, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The two shook hands and exchanged pleasantries.

Johnson appears excited to finally be in Taiwan. He immediately captures the audience’s attention as soon as he begins speaking.

The audience erupted in laughter when Johnson shares anecdotes from his time as prime minister. In his keynote address, he acknowledged the importance of closer Taiwan-UK relations. He also expressed concern over tense cross-strait relations, and like President Lai before him, voiced support for Taiwan against China’s annexation.

And thereby signaling their intention: by 2027, wherein not very far at all, to impose Chinese communist rule on this island, to eradicate democracy, to impose unification. Johnson called on Beijing to stop its intimidation and aggression against Taiwan, and said it’d be a huge mistake to unilaterally change the status quo.

And I say that for to our friends in Beijing—and they should be our friends, by the way—that it’s a huge mistake to use intimidating and aggressive measures against Taiwan. So thank you, Taiwan. Johnson also urged Western nations not to cower in the face of China’s pressure. Known for his public speaking skills and onstage charisma, his opening address this time also wowed the audience while tactfully voicing support for Taiwan.

Black garlic ramen on the menu! Taipei eatery serves Kumamoto fare

TSMC has built a major chip plant in Kumamoto, with a second one underway. But exchanges between Kumamoto and Taiwan don’t end there. A restaurant in Taipei is serving up Kumamoto delicacies, such as black garlic tonkotsu pork soup ramen, among others. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a taste!

First up, white rice infused with fragrant tea and sashimi made from blanket octopus. Amakusa is renowned for its octopus production.

Other highlights in the menu include the classic Kumamoto-style lotus root tempura and Yatsushiro baby mantis shrimp tempura.

There’s also Taipi-en, a dish unique to Kumamoto. The soup combines glass noodles with chicken broth, accompanied by seafood and slices of pork.

Lastly, a crowd favorite is Kumamoto black garlic Tonkotsu pork soup ramen.

There’s something unique in Kumamoto — it’s a ramen made with black garlic broth, and it’s worth trying. Black garlic has become a popular health food in recent years due to its fermentation process, and incorporating it into ramen gives the dish a depth to its flavor. It’s very delicious.

Kumamoto is a region is famous for dishes featuring horse meat, lotus root with mustard and miso, and unique sweets like ikinari dango. A restaurant in Taipei is now serving up Kumamoto delicacies. Its culinary team visited the region and immersed themselves in its rich food culture to recreate local delicacies in Taiwan.

This trip to Kumamoto was incredibly rewarding. We had the chance to explore the region’s traditional local dishes and some modern specialties that have been introduced recently. Throughout the process, we consulted various references and materials, which helped us bring some of Kumamoto’s local specialties and famous products back to Taiwan. We also visited Yatsushiro, where mantis shrimp is a local delicacy. It’s not something you’ll typically find in Northern Taiwan. Locals in Yatsushiro eat it as a seasonal food, especially in the summer. Then we went to Amakusa, where meat is relatively scarce, so octopus is considered one of their regional specialties and has become a key source of protein.

Craving some Kumamoto delicacies? You don’t have to go far, you can get a taste of it in Taipei.

As the housing market has declined in recent years, middle-class consumershave largely turned to investing in renovations rather than buying new property. Riding this trend, the audio industry has been promoting new products such as embedded or satellite speakers so that people can enjoy high-quality sound systems even in old or small homes.

Many people who enjoy watching streaming services at home yearn for an entertainment quality that matches the theatrical experience.

Huge mushrooms pop up on traffic island in downtown Kaohsiung

It’s been so moist in Kaohsiung these past few weeks that mushrooms have begun popping up everywhere. Police even had to intervene after droves of people flocked to a traffic island to take pictures of massive mushrooms growing among the grass. Though cute and picturesque, experts warn that the mushrooms in question were poisonous. So unless you’re 100% sure of what kind of mushroom you are seeing, so don’t pick them or eat them.

They also grow at school when it rains, but they aren’t so big.

Some of the mushrooms are bigger than the span of a hand. The two weeks of constant rains were not fun, but for fungi, they were a great opportunity to grow in the middle of the road. The furor for these new capped neighbors has gotten people stopping on the side of the road and crossing the street haphazardly to take a snapshot. Police officers flooded with reports decided to pluck the shrooms out to prevent any incidents.

Officers told onlookers to leave, as they were disrupting traffic and endangering the safety of road users. They then removed the mushrooms.

The stars of the show are not as innocent as they may look. They are false parasols, a common species of poisonous mushrooms in Taiwan. Eat one, and you could end up vomiting and with diarrhea. In severe cases, they can even cause shock. Only forage mushrooms when there is no room for doubt that they are safe.

Some whitish-colored mushrooms have popped up at parks and on traffic islands. Do not pick them or eat them, and report any sightings on the 1999 hotline. The mushrooms will be dealt with by the relevant authorities.

And fungi have mushroomed all over the city, on stair railings, on trees and everywhere you can imagine. Though they have become a sensation online, locals would rather the rains end soon, even if they come at the cost of losing these charming visitors.
