Vice premier discusses Taiwan-US trade talks

Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun on Monday gave an update on the progress of Taiwan-US trade negotiations. The official said that talks are at a critical stage. She also answered questions about whether China has influenced the process. Let’s hear more.

There are several issues that we must tackle. They include access for US-spec vehicles, standards on agricultural products, import licensing, technical regulations that align with international standards, conformity assessments and so on. If we disclose too much information on our bottom lines or goals, we could impact the outcome of the negotiations. As for the China factor, and the falling through of previous Taiwan-US trade negotiations, sometimes the issues were related to timing or the fact that Taiwan is impacted by Section 232 tariffs due to our semiconductor and ICT industry. Whether there are other factors at play is not something that I can explain on behalf of the US.

I remain quite optimistic about the third quarter as a whole. That’s because most of our exports to the US are ICT products, which are still under consideration for Section 232 tariffs and no decision has been yet announced. So, exports on this front are expected to keep growing.

Taiwan continues engaging in negotiations with the US in hopes of a more favorable rate, after Washington imposed a 20% levy on Taiwan goods. But opposition parties have criticized the negotiation process as lacking transparency. Cheng has said that details will be disclosed to lawmakers and the public after a formal agreement is reached. She also said that the text would be submitted for legislative review, to ensure the process is transparent.

“美規車准入的問題，包含農產品的標準，包含Import licensing，以及符合國際標準之技術法規，及符合性評鑑等等，許多的這些議題，都是我們的必考題，過度的來揭露相關的底線，或是我方的想要在談判中達到的目標，那也有可能就影響談判的結果。所謂中國因素或是說，台美之間歷次談判有進展，但最後未能夠達成協議，我剛有說明一方面是時程因素，一方面主要是台灣涉及半導體，ICT產業的232相關的議題，至於有沒有其他的因素，我想我也不便代替美方來做說明”

“如果第三季整體面來講的話，我個人想法還是偏向樂觀，為什麼，因為事實上我們出口到美國，大部分的產品是以ICT為主，那ICT產品，還在232調查當中，還沒有對外公佈，所以這個部分，(出口)還是會持續的成長”

針對美國對台灣的暫時性關稅稅率為20％，採疊加形式計算，此「已知資訊」引來在野陣營猛攻「搞黑箱」，鄭麗君強調，未來一旦台灣達成正式協議，就會立即向國會與社會說明完整談判內容，並將協議文本送立法院審議，絕無在野黨指涉之情事。

The goal is to uncover well-known shops and bakers from every corner of Taiwan. Many of their products are excellent. This award can become a label. Shops can use this Top 100 Cake Gifts label for marketing.

We use natural trehalose sugar. When developing products, we trend toward making it healthy, like using low sugar and low oil in a multi-layered approach. Customers can still get the taste of a traditional Chinese cake, but without impacting health or nutrition.

There was also a display area for the pineapple cakes, egg yolk pastries, and other winning products at the award ceremony. To expand their international market, overseas distributors were also invited to attend.

Handsome police officer hailed as Taitung’s hottest attraction

Sometimes a beautiful face on a kind person is all you need to make your day. One woman traveling to the Taiwan International Balloon Festival unfortunately had a car accident along the way, but her mood quickly turned around when a young, handsome police officer showed up to deal with the case. This became the highlight of her trip, as she said Taitung’s hottest attraction is not the scenery, mountains, or hot air balloons, but this handsome cop.

A woman shared video of her trip to the International Balloon Festival. For her, the highlight of the trip wasn’t the balloons, food, or scenery, but something else entirely.

Her trip took a turn when she had a minor car accident, which she promptly reported to the police. To her delight, the officer who showed up was so handsome that everyone was distracted from the accident, turning a bad situation into the highlight of the trip.

Smoothly putting on his equipment and heading outside to the police car to begin his patrol, this is Hsueh Yu-po, a 21-year-old police officer from Taitung’s Chishang Precinct. Even though he is new to the force, his handsome smile and friendly attitude have already earned him praise. He can even speak multiple languages.

Police officers have a very masculine image. Now that I’ve joined the force, I make a point of studying law and foreign languages, and also work out to keep my body in the best shape to protect people’s lives and property.

Hsueh shares exercise videos on social media, showing just how hard he trains. He holds himself to high standards, doing his best to handle the responsibility of being a police officer and help everyone in need.

Japanese fans line up to watch human-robot dance inspired by Doraemon

Taiwanese choreographer Huang Yi loved Doraemon as a child. When he got older, he taught himself coding and programmed a robot to dance with him. He performed the piece for the first time in Japan, drawing nearly 600 people to line up early for a seat.

People throng to the Osaka City Central Public Hall, the line extending beyond sight all the way up to the third floor. These 600 people came to see choreographer Huang Yi and his robot, Kuka, perform at a cultural expo organized by Taiwan.

The orange machine named Kuka extends an arm to dance with its human partner, Huang Yi. But Huang isn’t just a dancer. He also created Kuka, and programmed it to move. Just one minute of movement took 10 hours to code. He was inspired by his childhood love for Doraemon, much to the delight of his Japanese fans.

My family had it rough growing up. It was Doraemon who helped raise me. So I really identify with its values. People, machines, technology, and creativity balance each other out and support each other. It’s extremely significant for me to be able to perform in Doraemon’s birthplace.

Next up was a performance by these Electric Divine Generals from Taiwan. The red-faced Electric Clairvoyant and the green-faced Electric Keen Hearing, together with a Goddess-Priestess dancer, captivated the crowd. The machine-like appearance of the divine generals left an impression on the Japanese spectators.

Having been born in the 1980s, I was certainly influenced by Japanese anime and manga. The gods have plated armor on their backs that look like a spine. So while they’re gods, they also look like robots.

A famous costume designer from Taiwan, Li Yu-shen made the two divine generals himself. Earlier this year, they were even consecrated with Matsu’s consent. He hopes that through this performance, the blessings of Taiwan’s deities may be conveyed to audiences from far and wide.

Bus passenger sent flying when strap breaks during sudden stop

A passenger recently traveling on a bus in New Taipei City never expected the nylon strap he was holding to break when the bus made a sudden stop. He was sent flying and tumbled hard to the ground, still holding the handle. Afterward, people were wondering how the strap could have broken off so easily.

This bus stopped suddenly when traveling at high speed, causing this man with a black backpack to lose his footing and fall backward onto the ground. If you look closely, you can see he’s still holding the handle attached to a dangling strap.

You’re supposed to hold the hanging strap for safety. But when the bus stopped suddenly, it caused it to break off, sending the passenger flying.

The part that broke was the white nylon strap on top. But you can tell from the video that he didn’t pull it that hard when it broke. The passenger was traveling on the 918 bus in Xindian in New Taipei City, holding the strap during the ride. He never thought that when the driver hit the brakes suddenly, he would lose his footing and the entire handle would tear off, sending him flying 2 meters backward. His wrist and other areas were injured in the fall. He later filed a complaint against the driver, who he said kept driving without saying a word.

The driver tried to comfort the passenger, but he probably didn’t respond because he was still shaken. The strap doesn’t have a service lifespan. It shouldn’t break easily. For instance, I went today and pulled on a strap, even hung from the bar, and it didn’t break.

A reporter went to try for himself. The handles on this bus were fairly secure, seemingly able to withstand his full weight. The station chief also said that drivers make a basic safety check before driving to ensure passenger safety.

Afterward, the bus company checked and replaced all the straps on the bus to prevent a similar incident from happening again.

Vegetable prices almost tripled after July storms and floods

Prices of leafy greens have gone through the roof after one rainstorm after another in July. A buffet owner says even at two to three times the price before, he still can’t get enough stock. And what’s more, the quality has gone down too. With Tropical Storm Podul around the corner, the problem may even become worse.

Once the fresh vegetable is delivered, staff at the buffet immediately starts prepping the ingredients. It may look like a lot of work, but the deliveries have actually become smaller due to floods over July in Central and Southern Taiwan. They’ve also become pricier.

The markets are all out of stock. If you go there, you’ll see that there are more people than vegetables. I’m not kidding. There are no vegetables for you to buy, seriously. Before I’d be able to get a truckful, but now I can only fill up half of the truck. And I have to spend a lot more, too.

The buffet owner says the sticker shock is real, now that vendors give quotes at two to three times the prices as usual. Leafy greens aren’t just more expensive, the quality has also gone down. For instance, bok choy now costs almost NT$80 per kilo, but comes with water-damaged leaves.

There are many rotten leaves that I can’t use. So I put those away to be returned later. It’s NT$80 per kilo but the quality is atrocious. So now I have to switch up the menu and make different dishes with root veggies, tofu, eggs and meat, while leafy greens can only be used as garnish.

Mr. Yeh says he tries to switch things up with other ingredients, but even so he cannot offer as many dishes as before. There are only five to six dishes to choose from today, compared to around a dozen before.

I’ve been in this business for almost 40 years. I’ve never felt such pressure before. Even NT$70 to NT$80 per kilo is considered cheap now. I don’t know how the average office worker is supposed to feed themselves now. I’m already absorbing so much of the cost.

Meanwhile, commonly used fresh herbs have also soared in prices, with coriander now costing around NT$400 to NT$500 per kilo. But the worst has probably yet to come, since Tropical Storm Podul is just around the corner and could make landfall anytime soon.

Japan raises alarm for pickpocket hotspots after 14 thefts in 7 months

Japan has issued a pickpocket warning for several tourist hotpots in Taiwan, amid an alleged uptick in thefts. So far this year, 14 pickpocketing incidents involving Japanese victims have been reported across the entire country. Japan’s de facto embassy warns travelers to stay on high alert at four locations in particular: night markets, Jiufen, Yongkang Street and Zhongshan Shopping District. Taiwan’s police says it will ramp up awareness campaign and crackdowns.

Watch out for pickpockets! This striking warning was posted on the official website of Japan’s de facto embassy in Taiwan. It alerts tourists of an uptick of theft at top tourist sites in the country, calling out several places by name: night markets, Jiufen, Yongkang Street and Zhongshan Shopping District. It urges travelers to zip their bags and wear them in front of the body. If you do get robbed, go straight to the police.

According to the Criminal Investigation Bureau, from January to July this year, there have been 14 theft cases involving Japanese victims in Taiwan. Most of them were in tourist streets, commercial areas, night markets and public transport in Taipei and New Taipei. The police says it will roll out stronger anti-pickpocket awareness campaigns in high-risk areas and crack down on pickpocket rings and repeat offenders.
