New park opens in New Taipei City, preserving area’s ecology and history

New Taipei City has just inaugurated another new park! Central Park located on the border of Xinzhuang and Taishan is now open to the public, giving a whole new feel to the Wenzaizun area. There’s ingenious design everywhere you look. It not only utilizes the topography of the land, but also turns low-lying areas into ponds that serve as both flood retention zones and an opportunity for ecological education. The park also retains some elements of its past as a blue-collar hub so that visitors can learn about the area’s history.

Children have a blast running around a new playground. Right there beside them is New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi, who visited to celebrate the opening of the new Central Park.

Apart from the flood retention ponds, the ecology is permeable and allows for water retention to nurture the land’s ecosystem. So actually, today is the first day for the new park, but also marks a new milestone for us.

The park was built following extensive rezoning, giving a new look to the Wenzaizun area. The designers used the land’s topography to create flood retention zones in low-lying areas that were prone to flooding, which can also educate visitors about living in harmony with the local ecosystem.

This park is pretty unique. It crosses over two districts, Taishan and Xinzhuang. It’s convenient for residents of the two districts, especially people living in the older communities.

There are markers of the area’s blue-collar history scattered throughout the park, along with creative landscaping, metal installations, and playgrounds. The original stone steps and walls from the area’s old houses were also preserved, giving visitors a glimpse into the history of Wenzaizun.

Over these past few years, we’ve seen Wenzaizun gradually coming together through redistricting to become a wonderful place to live, from the flood retention ponds, to the culverts, parking lots, parks, and roads.

With the opening of this new park, New Taipei now has yet another place where families can come to play and let off some steam.

又有新的公園落成啟用！位在新北市新莊跟泰山交界的中環公園，透過市地重劃翻轉，展現出溫仔圳的新面貌，公園裡處處可見設計的巧思，不僅利用地勢特色，把容易淹水的低窪地帶，改造成兼具滯洪與生態教育功能的親水生態池，更是保有過去黑手職人特色，讓民眾來公園玩，還能〝塭〞故知新。

公園遊戲區，孩子們玩的不亦樂乎，陪著他們的還有新北市大家長侯友宜，這一天，是中環公園落成、開放的日子。

公園裡更是處處可見，黑手職人的特色，地景雕塑、金屬造型裝置、兒童遊具的創意設計，也都保留原有的老厝石階、牆面等生活痕跡，讓民眾認識塭仔圳過往歷史，來公園玩，也能〝塭〞故知新。

Meet Jensen Huang’s children, who also work at Nvidia

With a market capitalization of US$4.4 trillion, Nvidia is now the world’s largest company. And of course, its CEO Jensen Huang’s every move is watched closely. That includes his family matters. Even though it’s quite common for American tech tycoons to not let their children get involved in their business, Huang’s family is different. Both his children work for Nvidia, earning annual salaries that exceed NT$10 million. Spencer and Madison Huang both worked in the hospitality industry once, but they later joined their dad’s company after studying AI. Let’s hear more.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has led his company to be the world’s largest in terms of market capitalization, which now stands at US$4.4 trillion. There has been speculation that employing his two children at Nvidia may be Huang’s way of making deployments for the future.

Jensen Huang’s son, Spencer Huang, once ran a bar in Taipei. He later studied AI at MIT and obtained a Masters of Business Administration from New York University. He then went on to work for three years as a robotics product line manager, with an estimated annual salary of up to US$530,000 or approximately NT$15.96 million.

Jensen Huang came to Taiwan amid fanfare during Computex in May. His son networked with manufacturers cooperating with Nvidia. Huang’s daughter, Madison Huang was also busy.

Madison Huang joined Nvidia before her brother. Over the past five years, she rose from being an intern to senior product marketing director in Nvidia Omniverse and Robotics earning an estimated annual salary of up to US$1.1 million or approximately NT$33.14 million. Colleagues describe her as having a vibrant personality and being a workaholic, often replying to emails within seconds. She often accompanies Jensen Huang to business events and attends dinners with top TSMC executives.

Madison Huang was originally interested in the restaurant industry and studied baking and wine at Le Cordon Bleu. After four years of work at luxury group LVMH, she furthered her studies in AI and data science and switched careers. Experts believe that Jensen Huang’s 3.5% stake in the company means that even if his children inherit the company, their decision-making power will be limited. Breaking with the usual practice in Silicon Valley of not letting children inherit their parent’s business, Jensen Huang has not shied away from this, and his children are active in his company.

Agrivoltaic technology is used to help rural farmers grow mushrooms

Mushrooms are a high-value agricultural crop, which requires specific temperatures and humidity to thrive. To allow mushroom farmers to have sufficient electricity to cultivate high-quality mushrooms, the Industrial Technology Research Institute, or ITRI, introduced agrivoltaic technology to farmers in Hsinchu’s Jianshi Township. With sunlight as a source of power, being remote is no longer an issue.

Following the footsteps of a mushroom farmer, we walked into this mushroom garden. In addition to mature mushrooms, there was also a large number of mycelia that would grow into mature mushrooms.

This is a mushroom farm in Jianshi Township. What makes this mushroom farm unique is that the humidity of this whole environment is controlled, and electric fans are installed throughout. And the power source is the sun.

The power supply needs to be stable, because sometimes there may be a typhoon or some natural disaster, causing the power lines to be cut. When that happens, we’ll rely on our own power, which comes from the solar panels on the roof.

It is very energy-efficient. It doesn’t consume much power. The sun and mother nature generate the power. So it is like raising mushrooms in their original natural environment.

To cope with the lack of electricity in the mountains, ITRI introduced agrivoltaic technology by setting up solar panels to generate power, so that mushroom farmers can have a stable power supply to control the temperature and humidity to create a suitable environment for their mushrooms’ growth. Being in a remote area is no longer an issue.

It gets cold in the mountains, so there is no need for an air-conditioned room. This place is completely natural, and we only use electric fans. The solar panels provide more than enough electricity to power the fans.

Because this is just a simple shed, we are unable to install solar panels on the structure, so we use photovoltaic panels vertically on the side of the structure as well as fixed photovoltaic panels next to it to provide electricity during the day.

The solar energy provides farmers with the electricity they need, who in turn can grow crops with high economic value for the nearby Indigenous tribes, allowing young tribes people who have moved away to return home with peace of mind.

First-grader cold calls neighbors to sell original drawings for NT$20

Kids in Taiwan often get homework assignments over summer and winter vacation, including a lot of dreaded math problems. But one first-grader in New Taipei seems to have had more fun this summer at his grandmother’s place in Hualien. The young boy decided to put his drawing skills to good use and sold his artwork at a bargain. Let’s find out how he did.

As soon as the rain stops, the young boy cycles through the neighborhood and rings the bells of every household to sell his goodies.

The boy is a first-grader in Banqiao, New Taipei. His school assignment over the summer was to plan an activity of his own and write a report about it. He chose to combine his drawing hobby, and even invited his fifth-grader cousin to join him. The pair then went on to sell their works to neighbors of his grandma in Hualien’s Yuli Township. Their voices could be clearly heard in the quiet neighborhood.

A number of adults were more than willing to part with their spare change, in exchange for a mini-masterpiece and a sweet treat. It couldn’t be a better deal. Throughout July and August, the two sold a total of nine original drawings. What do they plan to do with their hard-earned cash?

I sold four drawings. I’m saving the money. Then I’m going back to Banqiao, and I’m putting the money in the piggy bank at home in Banqiao.

Our neighborhood is quite safe, so I’m not worried about letting them go out on their own. It also makes them understand that earning money isn’t so easy. I’m also teaching them how to allocate their allowance wisely in the future, how much to buy and spend.

Quanta Computer subsidiary Techman Robot to be listed in September

Techman Robot could be the new star of Taiwan’s tech industry. Founded in 2015 as a second-tier subsidiary of Quanta Computer, the company is finally getting listed next month. It’s the first collaborative robot brand from Taiwan, and also among the world’s biggest. On Wednesday, Quanta Computer founder and chair, Barry Lam could not help but express how proud he was.

Techman Robot is finally leaving the nest. As a grandparent of the company, I’m really happy, really so happy. It takes so long to create a company like Techman Robot. This goes to show just how difficult it is to create a robot.

Quanta Computer’s second-tier subsidiary, Techman Robot is finally getting listed in September, ten years since its establishment in 2015. Quanta Computer chair, Barry Lam was clearly proud of this significant milestone for the collaborative robot, or cobot, company.

When I was young I really liked playing with robots. Today a robot company is getting listed. I’m really so happy. It’s the first and leading cobot brand in Taiwan. We’re no longer just an original equipment manufacturer. We now have our own brand. And so the costs of production aren’t so central, but producing value is. It’s not just that a company is getting listed or simply that the hardware is making breakthroughs. It’s the birth of a whole new platform.

Techman Robot isn’t only Taiwan’s first cobot company. It’s also among the world’s top three. To date, it has sold over 18,000 units of robotic arms worldwide. Their robots incorporate a native AI engine and a vision system to achieve various market uses. The latest “TM Xplore I” robot was developed with Nvidia and scheduled for release in September and mass production in 2026.

We’re only getting listed after we have a market and steady revenue, which is becoming bigger and bigger. But we can’t stay complacent.

In the first half of this year, Techman Robot has already made NT$890 million in consolidated sales, at a gross margin of 51.6%. The company appears poised to tap into the trillon-dollar international AI robot market.

Taipei stops using flashy robodog after backlash over China links

Taipei has put the brakes on its latest tech initiative centered on a smart robotic dog that would patrol the streets of the capital. While the device seems flashy and futuristic, it has come under fire for being identical to a Chinese military robodog equipped with a machine gun. In addition, its hardware is made and supplied by a Chinese company, and city councilors say that that could raise cybersecurity risks.

Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Shu-chuan is on a walk with a smart robot dog on an inspection of the pavement outside city hall. But doesn’t this robodog look familiar?

This other robodog with a machine gun on its back was showcased by the CCP in its military drills last year. The robot is specially designed for urban warfare and intel collection. The only difference with Taipei’s dog is the equipment they carry on their back. The dog has raised national and information security concerns, as the chassis is made and maintained by Unitree Robotics, a Chinese company.

A political commentator says it’s not just a cybersecurity risk. The robodogs can apparently be found on Taobao for NT$60,000 to NT$70,000, but in Taipei spent more than NT$700,000 on a single robotic chassis. An additional NT$6 million was spent on R&D, and voice recognition integration costs reached a whopping NT$10 million. A councilor doubts that the procurement was done following established regulations.

We asked the Department of Information Technology, but their answers didn’t resolve anything. The procurement clearly did not undergo an information security review, and completely violates cybersecurity regulations from the central government. The robot is basically laying all of Taipei bare.

The robot dog was bought from mainland China, but it’s just a vehicle. It’s actual “soul” is the equipment on its back, which was developed by a Taiwanese company.
