Car park becomes corrosive bubble bath for more than 30 scooters

A parking lot turned into a corrosive car wash in Taipei on Sunday morning. A driver was parking a scooter at the underground car park at Jiancheng Park only to discover the scooters were getting drenched by the sprinkler system. More than 30 vehicles were doused with firefighting foam, making the whole area seem like an overflowing bubble bath. Though it appears harmless, experts say the liquid could actually damage the vehicles if unwashed. Let’s hear more.

When I went down to the car park, I saw that everything was getting sprayed with the anti-fire foam. I looked at the ceiling, and amid all the water, there seemed to be flames on some pipes, I’m not sure what they were. My scooter was right below the sprinkler, and it got completely covered in foam. This kind of water used in these systems has low pH. It’s quite acidic, so it could cause corrosion on the scooters. But nobody came to explain the situation or offer help or compensation. I thought, whatever, let’s not make things difficult for them.

Most firefighting foam is acidic, so if you don’t rinse it off immediately, it could corrode the paint and damage the parts if the vehicle is left wet for a long time.
The city’s fire department says it did not receive a report about the incident, which is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. The man had his Sunday plans disrupted, but hopefully his scooter won’t be too heavily damaged. If not washed off quickly, the foam can seep in and damage the paint, which could cost a dear dollar.

停車場竟然變成洗車場！昨天(8/31)早上，有民眾把機車停到台北市建成公園的地下停車場，沒想到，疑似因為管線走火，啟動了滅火系統，現場不斷噴灑消防泡沫，男子看到這一幕，傻眼了，超過30台車都在泡泡浴裡面。業者表示，車子被消防泡沫噴灑到時，要立即清洗，否則可能會有侵蝕風險。

“下到停車場的時候，就突然看到他們那邊，都是灑那種消防水，然後我是有看到他們天花板，不確定是什麼管線，可是灑水過程中，是有一直在起火。我的車子就在下面，正下方，整台車全部都是泡泡水。消防水記得PH值可能是比較酸的，它對我們所有機車，一定就是會有腐蝕性，可是他也沒有第一時間出來跟我們說，後續有沒有什麼要幫忙，或是怎麼賠償之類，我自己個人想說算了不要為難他們。”

“一般消防泡沫都會有微酸性，所以如果你噴在車子上，不管是車漆或者是其他物件，你只要乾了或是久了，沒有立即沖洗，那他都有可能會產生侵蝕。”
消防局沒有接獲失火通報，而停車場這一噴，男子週日行程也大受影響，而且讓他很無奈的是，因為這種泡沫和一般泡沫不同，如果沒有立刻清洗的話，很可能會滲透進去，導致漆面腐蝕，需要花更多錢重新烤漆。
